Susi Air incident in Papua
This is a nasty situation for the pilot to be caught in, and potentially very dangerous for him.

Wow. Indonesia will not give up Papua just to save one Kiwi pilot, so sad. And these rebel dills think that something that Australia or NZ could do would influence the way the Indons treat the Papuans. Never happen.
I worked in Irian Jaya on the top left of the island, and regularly saw Indon soldiers armed with submachine guns looking aggressive when we landed in the boonies. |
New Zealand Pilot Taken Hostage PNG
NZ caravan pilot taken hostage and threatened with execution!

Aerial shot of the airstrip at Paro village showing the Pilatus on fire.
OPM have apparently declared Nduga Regency where Paro is located a no fly zone. No news since initial report but a lot of Police and Military movement in local area. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....c68ac9d31c.jpg |
Salusa, is that a zoomed in satellite image and if so what is the link ?
The pilot would need to be doing all that he can to avoid being 'rescued' by Indonesian 'military' forces. |

TV and print media report that the pilot has been taken as hostage and will be executed if the rebels demands are not met !

New Zealand Susi Air pilot held hostage by separatist fighters in Papua, Indonesia | CNN
Pilot: Philip Merthens |
will be executed if the rebels demands are not met ! And regrettably, if such a criminal act was committed by the separatists, don't the 'separatists' realise that it would give the Indonesian Military a perfect excuse to go in with all available force with the sole aim of wiping out, to the last man/woman, the entire separatist movement?:hmm: Something which I'm sure that Kopassa would absolutely love to do!!! |

Pinky, one would like to think that the NZ military would join in as well with the clean up, if the Kiwi pilot got knocked off.

Nothing about that threat in the article - indeed, quite the opposite.

It's just about $$$ Corruption at end of the day My gut feeling is that he will be fine and released when all the media attention dies down. The more attention we give them then the worse it gets m And yes, I'm guilty of it to. For now I'm sure Phillip will be fine and though in discomfort will be okay |
To be clear, this was in the Indonesian province of Papua, not in PNG. Two different countries.
|
“Our new target are all foreigners: the US, EU, Australians and New Zealanders because they supported Indonesia to kill Papuans for 60 years. Colonialism in Papua must be abolished.” The separatists have previously attacked and shot dead foreigners working for Freeport Indonesia, which operates the Grasberg mine in Mimika, one of the world’s largest gold and copper deposits. Even before the kidnapping of the New Zealander, the TPNPB had been involved in a series of deadly attacks this year including the shooting of five military officers who were rebuilding a bridge in Maybrat, one of them was killed. They also set fire to a school in Oksibil, in the newly designated province of Highland Papua where Mehrtens was taken hostage, and shot at a cargo flight at the Oksibil airport as it was descending, forcing the pilot to abandon the landing. |

And if the OP had taken a brief look he would have seen the event had already been posted in an adjacent forum. Sigh... |
pprune won't let me quote but regarding the tracker map:
Please, please delete this, Phil is a friend and I've been receiving updates round the clock and still hadn't seen this til now, there's absolutely no reason to post this. |
This sounds like a perfect job for the SAS?

I have deleted as requested.
However the info was and is already in the the public domain on various Indo news media outlets and social media. Apologies if it caused offence for anyone. Sal |

Yeah, just another arbitrary line on a map draw by colonial powers dividing people and causing this sort of mayhem for decades into the future. Incidentally, langtaimbak, a Friend used to fly from Wewak into Jayapura on a regular basis. He told me that once he walked into a Newagency/bookshop in Jayapura and happened to notice a School Atlas put out by the Indonesian Government for sale to Schoolkids. He picked it up and flicked through it. PNG was called "East Irian.' Australia was listed as being 'South Irian.':hmm: Curiously, the next time he went there, the Atlas was no longer for sale. |
The Indonesians weren’t the only ones who were liberal with the truth. I remember visiting what is now the Hillcrest school in Sentani and seeing that library books had been edited by blacking out references to things like dinosaurs, fossils and anything else which went against the teaching that God created the world in 6000BC.
Hopefully this will have a happy ending for the pilot, but it won’t for the OPM. The indigenous population of West Papua was abandoned by the UN during the “act of no choice”, and no governments outside of Indonesia care any more. |

Must be getting to the stage now, if it hasnt happened already, Madam Susi's pilots in the region should cease flying in those areas.

I certainly agree with that. But it would have to be a united action by the pilots (which is difficult to accomplish at Susi Air) because it is extremely difficult -- some would say impossible -- to get Susi herself to budge from a position based on risk.

Nope but Susi is in a weaker position to protest than she has been in the past. |

Massey058; Got any info as to why? Genuine question btw.
There is another fairly significant issue that I'll refrain from mentioning here but it does put the ball in the pilots court. |

Hopefully a negotiation position can be found that enables this particular situation to end. |
I have an update from an International Security consultancy firm.
I won't post here considering the last flak I got. PM with professional credintials and I will consider sharing . Obvoulsy no journalists. |
Salusa, have you ever heard of social media, free to air newspapers, or even better still just Google ?
There is no secret ! |
