Susi Air incident in Papua

This is a nasty situation for the pilot to be caught in, and potentially very dangerous for him.

Wow. Indonesia will not give up Papua just to save one Kiwi pilot, so sad. And these rebel dills think that something that Australia or NZ could do would influence the way the Indons treat the Papuans. Never happen.

I worked in Irian Jaya on the top left of the island, and regularly saw Indon soldiers armed with submachine guns looking aggressive when we landed in the boonies.

Aerial shot of the airstrip at Paro village showing the Pilatus on fire.

OPM have apparently declared Nduga Regency where Paro is located a no fly zone.

No news since initial report but a lot of Police and Military movement in local area.

Salusa, is that a zoomed in satellite image and if so what is the link ?
The pilot would need to be doing all that he can to avoid being 'rescued' by Indonesian 'military' forces.

I think that it should really be called murdered because that it precisely what it would be!

And regrettably, if such a criminal act was committed by the separatists, don't the 'separatists' realise that it would give the Indonesian Military a perfect excuse to go in with all available force with the sole aim of wiping out, to the last man/woman, the entire separatist movement?

Something which I'm sure that Kopassa would absolutely love to do!!!

Pinky, one would like to think that the NZ military would join in as well with the clean up, if the Kiwi pilot got knocked off.

Nothing about that threat in the article - indeed, quite the opposite.

They (OPM) won't knock him off. Forget about military intervention and gung ho.

It's just about $$$

Corruption at end of the day

My gut feeling is that he will be fine and released when all the media attention dies down.

The more attention we give them then the worse it gets m

And yes, I'm guilty of it to.

For now I'm sure Phillip will be fine and though in discomfort will be okay

To be clear, this was in the Indonesian province of Papua, not in PNG. Two different countries.

“Our new target are all foreigners: the US, EU, Australians and New Zealanders because they supported Indonesia to kill Papuans for 60 years. Colonialism in Papua must be abolished.”

The separatists have previously attacked and shot dead foreigners working for Freeport Indonesia, which operates the Grasberg mine in Mimika, one of the world’s largest gold and copper deposits.

Even before the kidnapping of the New Zealander, the TPNPB had been involved in a series of deadly attacks this year including the shooting of five military officers who were rebuilding a bridge in Maybrat, one of them was killed. They also set fire to a school in Oksibil, in the newly designated province of Highland Papua where Mehrtens was taken hostage, and shot at a cargo flight at the Oksibil airport as it was descending, forcing the pilot to abandon the landing.

Right on, Chimbu. Also, it was a Turbo-Porter, not a Caravan...

And if the OP had taken a brief look he would have seen the event had already been posted in an adjacent forum.

Sigh...
