People like pilots, merchant sailors, journalists etc often get to fly into dodgy places. It comes with the job. They are not stupid, irresponsible tourists, for whom much of the smart traveller advice is written. Are you saying that if an Aussie crew transiting some sh!thole country got thrown in jail or were taken hostage, our government shouldn't make noises to get them out?
No I'm not saying governments shouldn't try and help but people go to those places with their eyes wide open. |

Its my own humble opinion and most of the expat aviation community that I know in Papua, is that Phil has basically been abandoned and that the Kiwi government is neck down in sand with fingers in their ears singing la la la.... I also agree, that were Phil a citizen of USA, it would be different discussion.. I don't know Phil personally, I have never met him in person but I feel for him and I will continue to stir the pot as much as I am able. |

Today marks one year since this pilot was taken captive.
It also sadly shows the weakness of the NZ government. Garuda and Batik continue to fly into NZ; if the new government were serious about resolving this situation they would put a stop to that immediately. |

Perhaps the Kiwi Government could take a leaf out of Israel's book and go lay waste to the rebels? NZ is not Israel. They would.never dare infringe another sovereign territory without permission, and even if they got that permission it's unlikely that they have the expertise to do the job without the hostage being killed in the attempt, plus losing their own troops. The best that NZ can do is support any Indonesian efforts to secure his release by fair means or foul - as odious as those efforts may be. |

it's unlikely that they have the expertise to do the job without the hostage being killed in the attempt, plus losing their own troops. |
