Places to fly in NSW
Hello,
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where you could fly for a 3 or 4 day trip in NSW. Two or three times a year, I manage to kidnap some mates and haul them off to places such as white cliffs, Mildura, Leigh creek etc but I'd like to try and find some more "off the beaten track" places, ie stations, farm strips etc. We usually hit Lake Mungo as an example (closed for renos at the moment), and yes I could trawl the country airstrips guide, but thought I'd ask you blokes if you've flown into anywhere that you would recommend to others for a visit. All and any suggestions gratefully recieved. :) |
YCNK for a good day at the wineries:ok:

coolah tops. flew to little stip there few years ago. great little town down in the valley. two pubs/ hotel. great camping near by.
cheers |
'Dalhousie Springs' far North East corner of SA, probably best in winter though!:ok:
|
If you don't mind venturing across the border, Milawa in NE Victoria is a great spot. Home of the Brown Brothers Winery. You can walk off the strip and into the cellar door. Details available via the website.
|
The Hacienda ALA in Nambucca Heads is nice. Little grass strip and right on the river, some great resturants and beaches near by. Only about 10-15 mins south of YSCH.
|
.........................how about something different that's still quite out of the way & this time of year it's terrific. FLI Flinders Island off the NE tip of Tassie. Remote, restful & a very friendly place. Obviously it means flying over water but via the islands such as Deal. Hogan etc the risks are slim that you would be lost forever:-). I know you where seeking places in NSW but there isn't a 'fence' around that part of the country you know so venture outside yr backyard (assuming it's NSW) for a change:-0) Sth of the border, Mexico, where the natives are friendlier:-)

Good Stuff
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, I'm checking them all out as we speak (type). The reason I limited myself to NSW was to keep the costs resonable for me and the pax as I'm out of Syd. That said, given some of the locations suggested, the NSW limitation is no longer.:ok:

Places To Fly To In NSW
Try these:
Tibooburra and stay at The Granites Motel Hungerford (QLD Border) and stay at the Royal Hotel Noccundra Hotel (QLD) and stay at the pub Eulo (QLD) and stay at the Eulo Queen Hotel Cameron Corner and stay at the Corner Store (check your insurance first as it can be a challenging strip if 4WD are on the road on late final) The list is endless in NSW and elsewhere. I've been doing what you do for lots of years and I have never been disappointed with anywhere I stay. Just don't take a city attitude with you.:p:D:ok: |
Places to fly in NSW?

Places in NSW

I did a three day a year or so ago in a 172 from Camden
Day 1 - Comeroo (already mentioned) Day 2 - Lunch Hungerford (also mentioned) Overnight Tilpa (excellent strip and nice old pub) Day 3 - YSCN via Cobar Did a four day coastal trip too - Merimbula (lunch) Great Lakes AP, Lakes Entrance (overnight) Tyabb (lunch) - via Wilsons Promontory Warrnabool (overnight) - via Great Ocean Road and 12 apostles Milawa (overnight) Lunch at Brown Bros winery, dinner at pub. Wagga then Camden Superb scenery on this trip |
Also have a look at http://www.aeroclub.com.au and http://www.piper.org.au for various events.
There are several clubs/schools ex YSBK that also do longer trips (usually annually and of 2 or 3 weeks duration). eg. http://www.schofields-flying-club.com.au |
Why dont you adventure yourself and come and visit the outback at Kalgoorlie...... and come and say Hi.....:)
|
How about flying to Corowa and spending a bunch of time at the Rutherglen wineries and restaurants, off to Milawa for more of the same, a short drive up the hill to Beechworth and then home via YMAY for a refuelling stop.
If time permits then you could add Bright, Mt. Hotham and an aerial tour of the mountains, I have done that trip and can assure you that the scenery is awesome, well worth the effort. |
YSAY
Bloody NSWelshmen - try YMAY.....
Cripes - I'm turning into Sunfish..... UTR |
Fantastic.
There seems to be a heap of great places to visit!! Thanks again to all for posting your ideas and suggestions, looks like I got my entire next year planned already. To be fair I'm stunned by how little I knew of the majority of these places when frankly I thought I'd seen most if it. (wrong!!).
Kickatinalong - I'll pm you for the ALA details at Cameroo. Easter is when we are planning the next one so that might just fit the bill. CISCODISCO - thanks for the kind offer :). I flew out there in the 210 once from YAYE via a place called Warburton range, there is an eye opening place. Even took a tour of Langtrees in Kalgoorlie:ok: thanks again to everyone. |
ALA details at Comeroo I have flown in there twice. The strip is 350 ft elevation, 36/18, 1000m, hard clay and would not be suitable after rain. |
Can we sticky this thread?
|
No need to sticky it Angry Rabbit, (Crosshair, get it!:D:}, erm, sorry), just keep it alive by posting in it, it returns to the top of the page with every new posting.
I get sick of all the stickies at the top of every page. Cheers,:ok: |
Milawa
Hey guys,
What a great thread ! I was thinking of doing a similar trip, and now im keen to do the Milawa winerey over nighter after reading this. Can anyone give/PM me more info on flying from Sydney to Milawa and any suggested fuel stop airports and accomadation ? Cheers X :ok: |
Milawa
Can anyone give/PM me more info on flying from Sydney to Milawa and any suggested fuel stop airports and accomadation ? Plan to fly in before lunch. Airstrip details here. Airstrip pic here. Enjoy Brown Bros Epicurian lunch - a number of small courses each with a matching glass of wine - superb menu. Then retire to Milawa Lodge Motel for a snooze (they will pickup from airstrip - but its only an 800m walk). Enjoy a beer and evening meal at the the Milawa Hotel. There is also premium (expensive) accommodation at Lindenwarrah, almost opposite Brown Bros. I have not stayed there. Milawa is about 2 1/2 hours flying time from YSCN in a 172. Make a wee/fuel stop in Wagga if required. There is no Avgas at Milawa. |
The Blue Wren at Mudgee is a good one - wander through the vineyards to the restaurant, stagger back *hic* to the airport afterwards.
That's just walking distance - there are plenty of great wineries, eateries and Pubs in Mudgee. ...Oh and there are frozen pies for $2 in the Aero Club freezer if gourmet food isn't your thing :} :yuk: :ok: |
Geez, this is so far one of the best threads on Pprune!!
Why didn't I think of it.... and while we're at it, why limit ourselves to the eastern states. the mrs is not going to be able to keep me down for much longer! (I'm on two week enforced grounding due to expecting mini sprocket) |
Mungo Lodge
I've been a frequent visitor Mungo Lodge as its 3.5 hrs (182) from Syd and really gives your pax a feeling of the outback from the city. Its also about 30 min flying from Mildura so I've often taken them there for the day for wine tasting etc (great stuff). The other good point is that you can taxi right up to the accomodation, decent resteraunt and more importantly a well stocked bar. I think the web site is www.mungolodge.com, they are closed at the moment until April.

Sticky this Thread
Sprocket is right, this is an excellent wee thread to share great little trips away on. :D:D:D
p.s. Congrats on the new little one Sprock. |
something I meant to do last time...
Old Bar is neat little strip on the coast just south of Taree. It's 200m from the beach. Anyone been there/got any info? I think that might be a pretty cool destination for those keen on fishing. sc |
Lots of useful info on this thread so far - maybe worth expanding on it further.
I have a loose plan to go for a bit of a wander next week... The current plan is something like:- YSCN-YBCV-YLRE YLRE-YEML-YBMC YBMC-YYNG YYNG-YCBN-YCBG-YSRN YSRN-YSCN Any suggestions on places to stay/visit/see within this area? The only two fixed points on the plan are YBMC and YYNG, everything else is open to suggestions. |
AC.
Miraz, what AC you taking out of Camden?
|
Boardpig - either BXO or LJE

the glass
Nice AC, fly them both regularly. Love g1000's, even got little lightening bolts to appear on the storm scope a few weeks back. Sounds like a good trip you've planned.

I thought YMAY was in Mexico not NSW as was asked for, RTFQ.
Kickatinalong |
YMAY, is indeed north of the border kicka. CASA thinks we're part of Melbourne (YMAY), but the NSW government begs to differ.:}
(I'll ignore the RTFQ comment for now.) |
I hope you good folk out there don't mind my bringing this topic back up to the top!
Any more ports to add? |
Places to fly in NSW
YMAY?
Why, that would be me and I am definitely in NSW. On the other side of the creek lies Wodonga In Victoria which is about 30 Mi north mod Milawa. |
