Darwins "Haunted" Corner

i see that Chartair has recently hung their shingle on the "haunted" corner in Darwin's GA.

hope they have better luck there than the previous (multiple) tenants.

perhaps it's the proximity of so many dead or dying aircraft on the apron that is bringing the mojo down.

and - Oeverells have sold. dunno if they are closing or not - anyone know?

Pseudonymn 18th Jun 2007 08:55

Which corner is 'haunted' huntsman? :suspect:

virgindriver 18th Jun 2007 09:03

Take your pick of corners- Arnhem Air corner, Exec Air corner or Aeroclub corner..... what were the other choices again?

Howard Hughes 18th Jun 2007 09:20

Perhaps it would be prudent to stay away from Darwins GA apron altogether...;)

morno 18th Jun 2007 11:45

Chartair haven't really had a permanent home in Darwin at any time though. When they were working out of the Air North hangar I wouldn't have even called that a permanent home.

Best they have done was probably when they were next to Overell's there for a while.

Ahh well, bad management is the problem to things like that I guess.

I didn't think Chartair were that poorly managed? They seem to have been around for a while.

So have snakes, cockroaches and the clap. Fidel Castro has been head honcho in Cuba for forty years, and aint that place riding the boom. Not.

OpsNormal 19th Jun 2007 00:19

It would be a real shame if someone couldn't say something positive about a company once in a while.

If you can put aside the politics that happen in many small companies (even large GA companies) from time to time and actually enjoy the flying then your own stress levels wont suffer so much.

I was guilty of that for a while, however I enjoyed most of my (almost) three years at Chartair, even that trying time in Darwin where the "parent" company undercut the up and coming..... with their own aircraft.....:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Life goes on. All the best to those still involved with the company, 'specially Fonz (Orrrrrr Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnn!!!!), still down there in The Alice? http://www.pprune.org/forums/images/...ons/icon14.gif

The Company will be probably still banging around in those aircraft in ten years from now!!!

Have they done anything about the TN base yet?

Counter-rotation 19th Jun 2007 12:57

I can say that pretty much bugger all has been done to fix the TN base. From external appearances anyway.

Competition now exists on the field there too, and it serves them right if they're driven out (management that is, not the pilots who always have worked damn hard in that place for little thanks).

ITCZ your sentiments above are pretty much the same as mine.

The experience I got working for that mob in that place was only just worth the stress and aggravation. Somedays I don't think it really was worth it, and there's plenty of others I know who'd agree (I'm talking about people that worked there, not those who passed through from time to time).

Ops Normal, I heard a rumour that Fonz has left the building!! :D:D Well done maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!

Richo 19th Jun 2007 14:40

Acording to many who used to work there, CHARTAIR already has it's own Haunted hanger.

For those who have worked a late night or early morning in the AS hanger/office, and have had the chills or even the foot steps on the stairs.

Maybe the ghosts even had the keys to Rogers magic cabinet, downstairs in the same hanger?.

Bit of a shame to hear the TN part of the company is/has/was having some trouble. It used to be a good show back in the early days of the second coming. Just really hard to sleep in the back room when the RAAF was night flying.

Huntsman

I presume you are refering to the old ARNHEM corner?
Though Virgindriver has a point, all the corners in the southern GA have a few bodies buried under them. Speaking of bodies, are the NT Police still in there?

If someone could pm me the initials or names of the guys/gals still working in TN i'd be pleased. Anyone there in 04?

Rich-Fine-Green 19th Jun 2007 17:10

This might be old and tired news but during my last glance around DN GA in 2006 - I didn't notice the company once operated by - lets just call him SW.

With the Fonz "gone" I don't think that there is anyone left who pre-dates about the end of 2005, apart from HM in DN, the Alice Ops team and PT in the hangar.

R-F-G. Aust. Jet have done wonders in removing all traces of that era.

Hey Flintstone, any further developments with that tome?:D:D:D

huntsman 20th Jun 2007 03:57

i was talking about the "WimRay/Ngukurr/Aboriginal Air" corner.

i forgot about Arnhem Air.
that really is going back. (for me)

Richo 20th Jun 2007 07:52

Sorry Huntsman, I was thinking about the end where the water flows too when it rains.

I must be bloody old, because I remember the night we put those demountables on a truck and drove them down 36 from the OLD southern GA area.
Roy, Bob, Ray and the rest of the wray mob.

TN in 04, way to late i was thinking more like 99

Airnorth building YPTN

Back in '04 the building needed a good coat of paint and something to be done with it. Are Chartair still using the building? We only had a few pilots there and it always seemed there was potential for a decent size base if only someone would spend some cash.... So who is the new operator on the field?

And where'd fonzie go?

TN Base not that bad

I spent from Mar 04 thru Dec 04 in TN base with Chartair, cant say I miss it that much, but I will say this! the experience gained doin those bloody mail runs in clapped out old 210's you cant buy.
To the boys and girls who worked in TN and Alice over the years Iam sure you know what Iam talking about. To the the crew in TN now I hear you got a new paint job and some new lino in the office, do you still have the sagging desks and the rusty fan and filing cabinets. I think Roger spent some cash there once to get the hanger doors to work, but that was only because the aircraft where stuck inside. I do remember one story inparticular when the aircons crashed in the office, it was about 45 deg inside, I rang head office where they where injoying the comforts of home, and was promptly told that we should use rusty fan till fixing can be arranged. (Six Weeks) So we fixed it ourselves, should have charged em!
I also remember the Fonz in his first few weeks at chartair coming to releive in TN base, I promptly sent him to Hooker Creek. (sorry Fonz got to start somewhere, I know you loved it, Mable says Hi my Fonzi were you bin)
Working for Chartair back in 2004 was a great time in my so far short career I will always have good memories of, especially walking back to the airport after a big night on the town in dat wan Kathurine at Diggers.
The boys and girl I worked with have all moved on to different areas now. Heres the list for those that are interested.
BR is working overseas in his dream job A320's. :ok:
MJ still in Roma on the kero burners,:ok:
MH (Aerotropics Cairns/Horn Is)
SH (Rubbish) ******
NT (Pearl Darwin):ugh:
CL (Pearl Darwin)
SKA (Habibi) Overseas in the sand:
SW (GoldCoast) No you cant offload pax for grog. or can you!!!:bored:
BT and Chris at home home on the range in Qld building Drifters, :ouch:
IVM (Fonz) shortly to Regional Express (i didnt want to say REX):E
CB (Aerotropics Cairns) hope ya well mate :ok:
DW (Corporate Air)(still reckon you chuckedup mate good effort on your first night with the company, thats a pass) :yuk:
BW Chicpea (where are you this week) remember the pizza and beers in Alice ouch!!! :\
NB you need to leave Tennant Creek (or have you already):yuk:
PT (still swinging spanners in Alice, hope ya wife and kids a well mate)
TR (keep taking those pills Timbo):8
And me Iam of to Perth on the Braz. :ok:
For those that I have not mentioned Iam sorry please feel free to add your details.
There are many more pilots who I have not mentioned who have walked the hallowed hallways of the Chartair TN base. Iam sure theres a thousand stories and a million memories.
Good job lads thanks to all those that keep in touch over the years.:D

DUXNUTZ 22nd Jun 2007 15:13

With a tear in my eye i recall.

Those mailruns are legend around the company i work at in the States. Guys/gals cannot fathom the joy of banging round the NT in some of the highest time 210s in the Southern Hemisphere... seems to remember why we had to fill oil from a drum in the hanger (we burnt soo much it was cheaper to by a drum!).
I still recall the negotiations with the various clinics to get their 'patients' to shower before a charter flight!
Good times.

So where are you now Jackthelad?

jackthelad 22nd Jun 2007 15:39

Theres pleanty of Love

Gidday NUTZ,

Yes I remember once asking a nurse to make her patient go home and shower and while he was at it leave his 100'000 little fly mate behind. He promptly went and soaked himself under a hose and came back to the a/c soaked and said hed showered, my next words where clear prop.

jackthelad 22nd Jun 2007 15:59

Your C210 TWP is alive again

Nutz,

You wont beleive it but just a few weeks ago (iam lead to beleive) VH-TWP took to the skys yet again. I bet you have fond memories of the day you and the boss wrote it off. Ill try and send some photos. The pilot that told me that its up and running again also told me your skid marks are still at Bessy Springs. Ahhh memories hey!

Flintstone 22nd Jun 2007 17:20

If it was written off..................?

morno 22nd Jun 2007 17:31

Ahhhh, the memories. I still reckon some of the best experience I have gained so far was at Chartair. A lot of it thanks to an unamed individual, but I'm sure he know's who he is.

Last I heard, MF somehow got into one of the RFDS sections, on a PC12.

Fonz.... Maaaaaaaaaaaan

DUXNUTZ 22nd Jun 2007 19:48

Good golly gosh! You just can't kill those 210s. Might have to fdw on my photos of the experience with those flying it!

OpsNormal 23rd Jun 2007 01:12

Jack, did you go the NT, to Qld, then to WA?:oh::oh:

BW is now a resident in our Nation's Capital flying RPT for the mob across from DW's (now) home base.

TS has now headed back to Darwin, joining DC (I'll never ever forget that night at Melanka's with you and MH - deadset gold!!!!) on the 1900.

MH is to tie the knot come this October. Big Thumbs Up! :ok::ok::ok::ok:

MW is poling around yet another shiny new jet in the same highland stable up New England way. Did he ever work out that red residue in tha PA31 engine?

LR is still plugging away at NTAMS in TN (you need to get outta there mate - that classic dive through that window at BW's that night I'll never forget in a million years!!!!):D:D:D:D

FM is now in Qld (Police?) Air Wing.

DH has taken-up residence on the NSW coast flying t'prop RPT.

Is TWP any quicker than it was before? It surely can't be any slower? I last flew it on the 16 Jan 04 and did the NE in it out of Alice. It had an unfortunate demise when someone who should have known better pushed it a bit too far a few years ago now. It had been put together fairly quickly after the acident, however there was something just not right about it.......:rolleyes: So it sat for quite a while.:oh:

The Mosquito 1 arrival Tindal

Hey Ops

Were you around when one of our famed pilots conducted the Mosquito One Arrival at Tindal, it still rates as one of my favorite GA moments. Iam still trying to work out how that happened.

Iam trying to source some photos of the new TWP, I have some photos in my stuff in Brisbane of the wreckage.

Yes, Heres my journey so far! Brisbane,Rockhampton (Horizon),Alice Springs,Borroloola,Tindal Alice Springs (Chartair & Abo Air), Darwin,Hooker Creek, Torres Straits, Cairns (Aerotropics), Kalgoorlie (Goldfields Air Services GAS),Perth (Network). Stopping there for couple of years. Need to give my family and wallet a break. But loving it all the way. Ive made some really good mates and have a million photos.:ok:

OpsNormal 23rd Jun 2007 03:37

TWP has been in the air for at least 6 months now. It is not hat quick, not that straight but it still flys and will still carry a load and therefore make money i guess. Has had a few teathing problems but all reasonably sorted now. Same paint job as WMP, NQP now in the paint shop for the same paint scheme. Just a few more to go! Sorry no photos

Gold Medal effort

If anyone has paid a visit to the Chartair office in DN, they will recognise this Holly-wood (pardon the pun) celeb....very good :)

Lets not forget the guy who hooked up with an olympic swimmer one night, only to see her out with her b/f the following weekend.

Or DH's farewell drinks @ Stokes Hill Wharf. Kindly put on by higher authority. Followed by more drinks @ the Vic where i made the excellent choice of utilising the cash put aside for a cab ride home on tequila shots. The 5 1/2 hour walk home to Palmerston will long be remembered. Who ever said "These shoes were made for walking" was definately not talking about mine. 12 months later i still dont see the funny side of it, but i'm glad everyone else does.
