On the other hand, there are probably a lot of guys just waiting for Qantas mainline to start hiring (it will surely be doing so at some point); and then I would think there would be a massive cleanout.
How many will lose patience waiting? And will J* and V have jobs for them? |
You'd have to think that some will get itchy feet. After all if they can land a 737 spot with VB then the pay change is not huge and only for a year or two.

JQ group (Aust/Asia/NZ) will get 50 new A320 over the next five years plus 15+ 787. Two more A330 later this year. Sure the pay is lower than elsewhere but progress to command should be quicker - especially if you are prepared to move around to get it. JQ plans to recruit about 120 newbies in 2010 and is making good $$. I have heard VB may be up there too. For those thinking about making the jump, in this industry (which is fickle at best) a bird in the hand...... RM:) |
It may have begun...I know of four resignations from one unit since beginning of the year. All heading to LCC's apparently.

Those in the ADF thinking of leaving for a LCC and who face the prospect of pay-for-endorsement should be aware that after a total of 18+ years of Service the ADF may cough up for most if not all the cost of the endo. At least this is one benefit of giving your soul and paying your taxes to the government for a generation! Indeed you can get paid whilst doing the endo as well as have them front the bill. Who said Defence never gives anything back!
If you leave one day before the 18 year mark, the system will happily only provide you with CV writing assistance. All this whilst offering bonuses for the experienced jocks to stay on!:ugh: |

No Sandy am not beating a recruiting drum but always ready to offer advice to anyone to save them money and hassle. This thread seems popular (57000 views to date) so seems there might be a little bit of interest.
Having made the jump to a LCC my own view is that traditional airlines like QF and CX - which have been the obvious and preferred first ports of call for RAAFies interested in an airline career, are adjusting to the operating environment, and things are changing rapidly. LCCs seems to be becoming the fast track to a jet command albeit a less palatable and more expensive option. They are not for everyone (some of the T&C giving many the s**s), but LCC in oz are generating new markets and also taking some routes from traditionals, and providing lots of jet and type experience to those who want it. It is these guys that will increasingly move the the higher pay and better conditions of the traditional airlines (when they start recruiting) and the LCC will suck more up. With ADF pay now better than your typical LCC, a decision to leave and fly for airlines rest more now with things like where you want to live, shortest time to command, and how much it will cost you to leave. Just my ramblings.... COR - I hope the CTAS has not been altered. The precedence has been set with quite are few leavers getting the full endo cost. But the CTAS application must be strictly by the book and the letter of offer from the company must offer a position strictly upon passing a type assessment (ie simulator) against which the CTAS training will be applied. The resettlement officer I used was an expert on this and it was approved within a few days. |
The money available for CTAS seems to be very dependant on your argument. Have seen a couple recently get far larger dollars than 4400 on exit, and not just on a single endorsement. The form is a bit sneaky though, the CTAS is supposed to help you re-settle but if you have a letter of offer, you don't qualify for the cash (or so the form says - because you're considered to have found suitable employment). Who punches out without a job and decides which endorsement to hook up with no vine to swing from?

Are guys going back to the Reserve or PAF - I thought the RAAF was full-house and weren't taking people back?

Yep, none coming back to my knowledge to PAF - only Reservists.
Alot of QF long haul guys doing Reserve time at the moment it seems. |
I had an informal interview with my FEG manners, they're worried. They have already asked the powers that be to increase the retention bonus and they have gone around my unit asking each pilot without ROSO, 'do we need to be worried about you?'. I know two who have had interviews and a couple more that have applications in (including me).
All of us are looking at LCC's, we would prefer a mainline airline but.... The RAAF's not the place it was when I started flying, I guess that is to be expected but I don't like the direction my FEG is heading. When I was a boggy I didn't care about such things, the flying was cool, the beer was cold and the shims were hot. Maybe I'm one of those "malcontents and deadwood" - might be time to move on :). p.s. Wannabe's don't be discouraged, it still beats working for a living. |

I'd be thinking long and hard about leaving the RAAF for a LCC. As I've said before VB on the 737 looks reasonable but anything less is a touch and go proposition. If you've made SQNLDR by the 10 year mark you're better off waiting rather than jumping early. It might mean you take longer for Captaincy if you end up going to a LCC but the much higher salary, larger bonuses, and good super a SQNLDR is on in defence more than offsets this. By all means jump if it suits but do your home work first.

Part of the problem is they show no interest in you until your Roso is up and by then you have probably made your decision.
