As far as I'm concerned, a potentially restorable airframe slowly rotting in a swamp is of absolutely no heritage value whatsoever!!:mad:
A far better idea would be to allow recovery of an airframe for restoration on the strictly enforcable (how to enforce is another question) provision of returning to PNG a fully restored to static display example of the aircraft recovered. ie If you want one for yourself you'd better get a couple to start with.

I believe Weeks got a lot of stuff from the " Momets" yard in Wewak?

Yeah Tinny been out there by car too...but it is not a Hudson though is ex RNZAF...you could still see the markings last time I was there about 10 years ago.

And that 75mm field artillery piece they bolted in the B25 J parked next to it would make your eyes water...firing it let along being on the receiving end.

I am having a real blank on the RNZAF type...similar to a hudson but bigger.

Wouldn't a B17 technically still belong to the US government? Just because it's old doesn't mean it's not still theirs does it? Can't imagine the Oz government being too happy if one of our current RAAF planes ended up in a swamp and the PNG museum or whoever sold it a "warbird enthusiast".
Or did the US Army Air Force have a grand sell off of all crashed/destroyed aircraft "as is, where is"?

There was a magazine article a couple of years ago showing an ex-PNG Tony under rebuild in the States. The fuselage was substantially complete with a nice shiny skin. :)

Seem to remember when the Ford Tri-Motor at Myola Lakes was being disassembled and transported to POM , the wing , slung from a helicopter , began to ' fly ' , causing a few anxious moments above.

The American B-17E warplane that crash-landed in the Agiambo swamps of Oro (Northern) Province will remain at the Lae Bismarck Maritime Wharf pending a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) inquiry on the 1st of July. The Internal Revenue Commission will not issue an export permit pending the inquiry. The PAC is responsible for protecting public funds and state properties.

Bruce Hoy, the first curator of Modern History with the National Museum, says that he received several requests to recover the B-17E aircraft while he was in charge of the museum. One of the proposals he received and passed on to the politicians for consideration was that no money would change hands but rather the B-25 on display at Girua Airport Oro Province was to be restored externally, the Museum's P-38 fully restored, and an L-5 observation aircraft provided. Bruce adds that it was a far better offer than money because money can be so easily squandered on the wrong projects. Unfortunately because politicians get moved around in a typical PNG cabinet this proposal never eventuated.

Bruce says his main concern about selling any "wreck" to a private group of people is that their only object will be to make money out of the deal.

Airlines of PNG has launched the airline's first in-flight magazine called "Discover" recently. Discover is a joint venture with PNG based printing house South Pacific Post with any excess funds derived from revenue to be put into worthy community projects.

** Air Niugini **

Air Niugini, currently flying two Fokker F100's is rumoured to be almost ready to take delivery of another F100 to help with the replacement of the aging Fokker F28 4000 series fleet. Air Niugini has already pensioned off the 1000 series Fokker F28's. The airline currently uses the F100 to fly to Cairns daily and airstrips within PNG capable of taking the aircraft. It is anticipated that the flag carrier will get another one possibly two aircraft on top of the one coming soon.

** PNG Air Tour **

Heron Airlines -- http://www.heronair.com.au -- from Australia will be bringing a jet with 14 passengers on board for an eleven-day trip around PNG starting on the 21st of June. The passengers will visit remote parts of the Highlands, Madang, the Huon Gulf and a walk at the Lae War Cemetery, the active volcanoes of Rabaul, and walk part of the famous Kokoda Track.

One hopes they get them all back on board in one piece :uhoh:

I am reminded of the time I was flying in a Twotter when I got hailed by a young lad departing somewhere in a C206. He and his newly arrived in PNG mate on area famil had found an old 250Lb bomb laying in the grass...complete with tail fins and 'little propellers' (his words).

"Yeah I have seen it why?"

"We're gonna drop it"

"Wha..."

I was empty so slid into close formation and to my....coonsternation... saw the newbie holding onto it in the back...they'd taken the doors off:uhoh:

I moved over from echelon right to WIDE echelon left:}

They went into a right orbit over some swamp and the newbie kicked it out the door....it wobbled a bit as it dropped clear before plunging into the swamp...and without exploding plunged so deep into the mud it is without doubt now 'safe'.:ugh: :rolleyes:

Sort of a shame it didn't go off really:E

Later on I asked them if it was weeping crystaline green stuff like most of the old bombs laying around PNG...yeah a little...do you know what that is...no...:ugh:

Coulda (so easily) made a great story for the Darwin Awards.:E

LOL, actually I think we were. We'd both just taxied Kokoda for Moresby and after we joined up Moresby called and gave each of us traffic on the other...was quite funny really:E

I have had a formation flying endorsement for over 24 years and the chap driving RDB was highly experienced at flying in a straight line...having said that he kept trying to see me and turning in his seat...everytime he did the aircraft turned towards me so I'd just maintain formation and say "OI, stop turning around in your seat and look where you going!!" He's in EK these days apparently:ok:
