Wings of Gold by Jim Sinclair

I know some of you may be looking for Jim's books, "Wings of Gold" and the "Balus" series.

Can't advertise in in PPRuNe but if you go to a very well known on line auction and enter "Sinclair" in the Book Section Search, you'll find "Wings of Gold" being offered at a current bid of Aus29.99, which is a good price!

Bids close August 24.

If you can't work out where to look, either PM me or click on "Report this post" and I'll send you the URL.

Tinpis; Don't know much about SP therapy but used to regularly partake of 'two pela strongdrink'* at Club Dero on a fairly regular basis!
Guaranteed to have one feeling no pain rather smartly. Once had four in half an hour.! And still drove home!!

You only live twice. Once when
you're born. Once when
you've looked death in the face.

I never had the opportunity to fly a BN2 and most certainly glad that I did'nt! Deafness is bad enough from Fletchers, Daks and Friendships without Brittians efforts!

Like Chuckles, I got a 185 up arounf 18,000 over the Tari Gap area, F28 around 35 and the poor old -7 wallowed out around 24-25. i think best VMG was around 11,000.

Highest Airdrop in PNG?

For what it's worth.

Dropped supplies to trekkers on the alpine and lake country near Mt Victoria, from around 11,000 on 5th June 1969. It was done about 7AM while the tops were clear of the cloud lower down the slope over the forest country.

The Cessna 206 was VH-SPC, and the pusher and I were near frozen to death as it was a P model, and we had the door off on the RHS.

happy days,

Disco Stu tell me he was working with (training) the PIR in '69 and doing drops in the Myola Lakes area. At one stage they despatched 4 boxes of rations, each on a 28ft 'chute. As part of the 'sops' he called 4 'chutes open, and then watched as 3 of them were sucked up into a big black cloud:confused:

The 'Bou skipper (possibly the current CEO of CASA) made some kind of crow noise on the i/c and immediately returned to Moresby.:ok:

Disco Stu is still wondering if anyone has seen the 3 parachutes he signed for :8

Papua New Guinea brought a few current CASA staff undone in their previous RAAF career.

Another CASA employee was responsible for DHC-4 Caribou A4-264 over running the end of the strip a Tufi on July 20, 1971.

I think there were around six Caribou prangs in PNG, including A4-233 which pranged in the Kudjero Gap on August 28, 1972, with the loss of crew and all bar one of 25 PNG Army Cadets.

Sharpie 22nd Aug 2005 10:05

...and of course, the famous pulis boi-haus at Porgera!

Not to be outdone, the Army also managed to leave a few aircraft aroud the place.

Torres 22nd Aug 2005 14:09

Sharpie. That was A4-202. The RAAF generously converted it to a Pulis Boi Haus on June 11, 1965, when the aircraft was exactly one year old.

I still smile at the RAAF dude in A4-164 on October 18, 1978 who mistook Eliptamin for Telefomin and broke the balus trying to get back out. The recovery cost by Chinook well and truly exceeded a replacement aircraft cost.

Way back when even you were in short pants, the RAAF mistook a mission strip in the Bena - Finintigu??? - for Goroka. The Gillies boys painted "Finintigu" (??) on the roof of the Bellman hangar in Goroka, which the gendarmes and the judiciary took a dim view and fined them for their efforts!

Would anyone really care to 'fess up!! Just what is/was the (terribly unofficial of course) PNG Altitude Record for BN2's??
Not me Pinky - only flew a BN2 once and that was quite enough! :}

Gotta say the Bongo was/is a turd but it rightly earned its keep in PNG.

Helly took one for a spin in Hagen with the sales rep.
He got out mumbling stuff in German and went straight to the Hagen club.
I think it reminded him of the of some thing he was forced to fly in the Hitler Jugend.
Maybe a V-1 ? :hmm:

Sharpie 26th Aug 2005 06:30

I do not know about the V-1, but I do recall Helly talking about when as a 15/16 year old HYM cadet, he along with four other budding aces, in unpowered Me163's, would be towed behind a Ju52 to glide back to earth, getting practice for their big day! Alas, or good fortune, the advancing Red Army put a stop to his Luftwaffe career!

Thought you'd like to see what the pollies are up to in PNG (courtesy of Trevor Michies web site)

** Leadership **

A politician is trying to have the law that dismisses office holders if they are found guilty of misconduct in office changed so that it excludes politicians. The Lagaip-Porgera MP has proposed amendments to Section 27 of the organic law on Duties and Responsibilities of Leadership. The amendment would require the vote of a two-third majority of MP's on the floor of Parliament to become law. Other constitutional office holders would still be sacked if found guilty of misconduct in office.

What next?

Anarchy!

Torres 26th Aug 2005 22:46

Interesting thought, Sharpie. Yesterday I had a long conversation with a very well known building and construction mogul from the late 1950s to 1980s (now a car dealer in Emerald), as to where the PNG problems would end.

I suspected a civil revolt somewhere in the future, however his opinion is that a Dictator was the only solution.

I am sure the present PNG problems can not continue indefinately.

Taildragger 27th Aug 2005 18:09

Torres..... We have a dictator over here in Pomerania yer can have....no charge. Dictateress too... come as a pair.
