The next round: where is this view? Sorry, that the picture is a bit blurry and someone is standing with his head in front of the reg. But maybe one of the Talair pilots knows this Bongo so well, that he will recognize it. Maybe someone will even recognize the pilot (or himself :hmm: )Taken 1987. Got caught bad at Marawaka. :uhoh:
Circling under cloud REAL close to a ridge trying to peek over into the Marawaka valley, I found myself boxed in trapped and committed to the gap
Hurtling down the slope in the rain and in the treetops I thought I was buggered, when I saw the end of the strip. The wrong end mind, but it will do so I plonk the old 185 in downhill and arrive at the departure end. Five minutes for knees to stop chattering and taxi back to the park bay where the Kiap is waiting in the rain
"Where the bloody hell did you come from, we weren't expecting them to send a plane this morning because of the weather?" :hmm:

The Bongo from Wamina. i believe the damage was done when the Chook crew dropped it :ooh:

Okay, I'll have another go - Finshchafen?

Bit more overgrown and neglected in the more recent times when I have visited these spots. Marawaka and other such strips look like flaming bowling greens compared to the state they are in now... :ugh:

tinpis 19th Mar 2010 03:02

A few hundred demented kuka kuka dressed in haybales swinging sarifs on the Marawaka strip was a sight to behold,

That looks like Tapen to me - the strip that VH-RAJ was purchased for.
If so, as I recall the EOL was a lot less than 750ft.....

Got any old shots of commercial strips there Stroch?
Them GB strips are all the same, just long enough to get in a couple of rattles of the Rosary beads before take off.:hmm:

I donīt think I have a lot, as Dad was not really in the commercial aviation business. And when he wasnīt walking through the bush, he would be sitting behind the wheel of a Landrover Series II 109, or flying in the back of a mission or MAF cessna into those small strips.
But a quick look brought up this:

Em Madang ya. Runway 07. Had to do 2 x missed approaches there one dark and stormy night trying to get an F28 on the ground, but at least the fruit bats weren't out and about. :E

I love the bend on the road parallel to the airstrip in Goroka, must have been to go around a local politicians kau kau garden.

At the holding RWY 07 Madang in 1972
Suddenly, the tower goes nuts "All aircraft in the Madang area we are experiencing a severe earthquake, communications maybe interrupted !"
I look down the runway and ****e, its waving like surf and old CMW is rocking from side to side
Ask the tower for TO and refused. I ask again and say "I'd rather watch it all from 500' up actually ta"
The long grass on approach was waving like buggery by now, the man in the old fibro tower must have had thoughts about getting out
It obviously stopped and and things got back to normal, just another Madang guria
