HF / Worldwide Reciever
I have my trusty sony worldband radio - supposedly capable of picking up HF - Radio Australia etc - presumably it can (if operated correctly and feeling really bored)receive Aircraft HF transmissions. The question is how????
So far user inability has hit me along with a dose of retardism! I live in sydney metro area so i presume this may affect reception - the radio came with a long wind up aerial, and it has a digital keypad for dummies, a selector on the side for things like SSB - any tips or clues? So far i have tried all HF weather channels at appropriate times with no luck.

Well check the frequencies that it can recieve?
3S 6S and 8s are the HF frequencies that Flight Service now Flight Watch use. 6541 is the N.T. one ie. 6.541 Mhz is the actual frequency. The Band for HF is 3 to 30mhz, generally there may be some variations outisde that but no Much.
Your Sony may only have this in Bands or can you select the exact Freq?

hmm ok...this is going to indicate my lack of radio/HF and frequncy knowledge.
Its a Sony ICF-SW7600GR. Just in case anybody knows the model.
Apparently it covers LW/MW and SW and FM.
LW 150 -529 (153-522)
MW 530-1620 (530-1620 in 10khz or 9khz steps)
AM SW1621-29999
FM 76-108
it has an AM Sync mode on the side - Norm, LSB, USB and SSB.

Ok Mate it sound like its a standard SW Radio you have there?
The AM SW Band is the one you Need it 1621-29999 khz or 1.621-29.999 mhZ so thats the Band you need to use.

You can try am and THE sidebands(usb ssb lsb) to see if theres anything out there.
6.541MHZ or 6541khz should have plenty of Traffic on it But you may be out of the Skip Range and in a shadow of no reception. Try and get a PCA chart they have all the relevant frequencies on it.
You mayneed to try someones Pacific HF Freqs for an Airline or Other Countries. Maybe secured with SELCAL so you may be unable to here it.

If you are trying to listen to aviation broadcasts then you'll need to select USB (Upper side band)
Try listening to 6565 during daylight hours. There's usually a fair bit of activity on that.

TBT,I have a fairly old Sony ICF 7600,can't remember the rest.I think it searches at intervals of 9 HZ.Ihaven't used it for years except to listen to the footy in my shed.I'll give it a go using some of the freqs mentioned here and see how it goes.I may even be able to find the instruction manual.As I recall the digital input skips to the nearest "9"interval even when entered manually,so exact setting outside them isn't possible.Will let you know if I can figure it out

Well finally managed a distorted Volmet on the hour on 6676!
Just have to work on improving reception.

H.F. Reception
(1) Never inside unless you have a big antenna outside.
(2) Always better the bigger the external antenna, a long wire will do. A looooong wire is even better.
(3) You need to be able to tune in 100Khz steps. If it's locked to 9Khz steps even in HF you're out of luck.
(4) Night is ALWAYS better.
(5) Radio Australia has been gutted thanks to little Johnny, only Shepparton transmits generally now except for Brandon(Qld) to PNG.
(6) All general HF communications is SSB, LSB below 10Mhz, various rules above 10Mhz.

Had some brief success early last night with Volmets and some traffic from Brisbane ATC on HF. Couldnt hear the aircraft replies very well tho. Almost could hear some chatter (usually manila i think) on 8942.

It's your antenna.
Agree with all the above. Check to see if there is an earth plug slot also. I had a real top notch ssw radio once, multi channel etc, but until I did some theory on antenna's I couldn't get much out of it. Tried a long wire using cheap hardware wire, then tried coax cable. Both worked very well. Earthing the unit also helped.
