It's your antenna.
Agree with all the above. Check to see if there is an earth plug slot also. I had a real top notch ssw radio once, multi channel etc, but until I did some theory on antenna's I couldn't get much out of it. Tried a long wire using cheap hardware wire, then tried coax cable. Both worked very well. Earthing the unit also helped.
