Question Surveilance Australia pilots

Hello, I would like to know of any coastwatch pilots who have or are employed who got in with practically no twin hours. I am a few weeks short of the minimum requirements and would like to apply. However, with the oversupply of qualified pilots and less government funding (so I have been told), I think I will have to wait until I have 500 multi before I can compete for a position. The web site does not specify a requirement for twin hours, just MECIR and 3 renewals.

I am also aware of positions for observers. Do observers end up as PIC eventually?

Your comments are welcome!

Depends, are you male or female? I remember training a few aviatrix with not much twin time at all(<100hr). I also believe they have been known to employ a few fairly new CPL's.

Observers going to PIC, I do know of one there may be others. The bloke in question was one of the more senior and 'seasoned' observers . I would advise against joining as an observer thinking you may be able to go PIC after a year or two.

It's been a while and that's just my view, good luck.

I can confirm that what hoss has said in regards to the observer road to PIC is correct. Knowing the guy personally that hoss was referring to he is the only person that has gone this road. Surveillance Australia had to get a one off approval for him to be PIC from customs because of the terms of the contract.

Anyone know how the tendering process is going?

Are NJS a 'shoe in' or is there someone else lurking out there?

Hoss,

no such thing as a shoe-in, just ask Amman, Skywest etc.

Spies tell me that Customs are reasonably happy with Suveillance's running of the show. The whole NJS group was bought out some years ago by FRA of the U.k. I'd expect to see different tendering from them as compared to NJS. So, who knows.

How is the tendering process going?

How's about day 3 of a 1 year process. (figuratively speaking)
It hasn't really started yet. Not even sorting the chalf from the hay stage yet. Maybe in another 12 months or so would be a good time to ask.

And as far as the PIC, is that per chance the ex observer born'n'bred in Meeka?

Loosing the thread a little, methinks.
I think U2 is looking for a profile of the typical new recruit, with maybe a typical career path, condx etc etc.
Is there anyone currently with Surv. Aust. here that can help?
Sure a lot of people would be interested. I'm curious now too.

Thankyou currawong.

To elaborate, is our typical recruit at the regional airline stage in the industry or more of bush fire fighting cessna man/wo-man.

It is pretty hard to describe the ideal background for the job as there are such a diverse mix of backgrounds.

If you have knowledge or backgrounds in; maritime, military, RADAR, low level flying or photography this may be an advantage.

Generally, they tend to employ local people.

Have a chat with some of the crew next time you see them.

I can still say that it is the most 'interesting' job that I have had so far.

I had about 1550 total, 700 multi. Of that multi around 300 was on M/E Turbine (Single Pilot). Came straight from a GA Charter company. Didn't stay for long, but had a ball for the time that I was there.

Cheers

Can someone tell me about the flying that people do at coast watch. Pardon my ignorance but is the pilot just following the coast... flying a grid low level out at sea?? Any details would help, I've often wondered about their flying.

What are the conditions like?

Thanks in advance Mr. Hat

It would seem no current Surv. Aust. crew want to comment...

Could be -

A/ It is a big secret

B/ They are far too busy catching crooks to surf PPRUNE.

I used to do the visual tasking out of Broome many years ago flying the Islander and the Shrike.
Usually flew 4 or 5 on, 2 off or something like that. Ave 800 hours a year.
Customs would tell the base what flights they wanted and when.
A typical flight out of Broome would be about 4-6 hours long (fuel etc dependant) and you'd go up the coast and fly around the islands and then fly back to base off shore looking at other stuff. Sometimes you'd do a multi day task either up or down the coast.
You'd have an observer and a mission coordinator on board. Sometimes you'd have a Customs person with you too (or someone from the Navy etc)
The R406 would do a combo electronic (ie radar) and visual task. Again, Customs says where and when. They would spend more of their time over water. I *think* the ave flight time was about 4 hours.
The Dash 8 does a lot of it's flying over water. It's got all the toys and it can stay out there for many hours. Not as painful as the other fleet because it has a toilet on board.

Sounds pretty good - some good sights no doubt. What is it like to work for them? Is it just another GA company or is it run on a different level?

Mr. Hat,

Yes it was very cool. They were good to work for. No it is not another GA company, its got hints of GA in a big company environment. For example you'll have to top the oil up yourself before flight, wash the aircraft post-flight etc. On the other hand you will be paid well have overnight and other allowances and the opportunity to progress onto bigger aircraft, check and training etc.

Personally, I just enjoyed getting paid to do 'beatups' on those Indo pricks and illegal immigrants.

Is their electronic application form on their web page the best way to apply, or would a snail mail application be better?
I used the electronic method the other day, but they don't send a confirmation if they recieved the mail or not....

Is Surveillance Australia employing at present?

When you first start with the company are you always posted on HID, or can they post you anywhere? After you initial period of employment can you bid for postings?

Cheers
