stop passing cyber exams!! ASL shares the pain...:( more money needed to feel better!

I am not sure if this has been covered already, but I could not beleive my eyes when i read that ASL will increase their cyber exam fees as of this tuesday.

$10 per exam people!!! and some of their reasoning is beyond a joke... not as many people doing re sits?? so they aren't making as much money??? Isn't it a positive thing if people pass first time??

If you have not already read it, I recommend having a look at their site and reading their information regarding the price hike. I hope every gets a good laugh out of it like I did.

I am still struggling to re arrange my work schedule around ASLs ' efficient ' exam system, and I find it very difficult to stomach the extra fees... but I have no choice. As ASL states, they are competetive with other organisations in Australia that offer the same services... sorry... what other organisations???

ASL should be ashamed of ripping us off even more than they have been since March 2002, and CASA shouldn't have bent over and approved the price rise. It is hard enough to survive in this industry as it is.

Where are you ASL and CASA reps??? Do you ever take any notice of these complaints or comments???... Please take the time away from counting your money to do so!

Thumbs down

Hey, give poor old ASL a break. Just think how the "influx into the market of highly trained pilots following the Ansett collapse" has taken away from ASL's income. I mean at the moment they'll only get $1250 out of me to do exams up to ATPLs instead of the $1410 they'll get after July 1st
I don't feel too guilty though because that is with no resits. I'll just have to make sure I fail a few to keep them afloat.

Red face PMI exam

Previously, PMI exam was around $90, and faxed to the CFI. You did it, answers faxed back to Canberra, and a result within 7 days.

Now (get this). Book through ASL: Cash or cheque only, no Credit Card. Bookings only for about 4 sittings a month. $65 to ASL, $69 to CASA. Exam, the same 20 questions floating around for years, is posted from CASA Canberra to ASL Canberra. ASL then AirExpress said exam to exam centre. You front up, do the exam, then watch the invigilator seal answers and exam into another air express envelope to go back to ASL canberra. From them, it goes down the road to CASA canberra, and candidate gets result within 7 days.

My hat goes off to these denizens of forward thinking and efficiency.

Not to mention that the PMI exam has/had 2 different pass marks shown on the paper. Front page says 70% then the next page says 75%, oh yeah they changed its name too.

No one likes a price hike , but just think of our brothers and sisters in New Zealand that are paying $166 per ATPL subject , bet they would rather pay the $100 for the lot like us. I think in total they pay around $2000 through to ATPL.

Just a thought.

Angry

And did ya notice that some of the questions shouldnt even be in the exam?.

I urecently sat an exam and when finished was quietly confident in a good result......... well, aftyer it was marked I near fell over..... I failed. I did a bit of thinking and had a look at the KDR and to my suprise, I had failed on questions that are very basic and I use every day in my work.
I looked at the website for a route of appeal....... none evident.
I resat the exam........ Marginal pass. this time I noted the same questions that I had failed on last time and wrote em down with the possible answers. I asked a cuople of people who are in the know to look at the questions and to pick the appropriate answer. Well to my not incomplete suprise they picked the same answers as me......... I had the pleasure in notifying them that the answer they picked was wrong.......... boy were they unhappy, and they all informed me to chase it up as there was obviously errors in the marking system. it seems after several phone calls and a few emails to the people listed on the CASA website, no one gives a turd and there is no right of appeal or provision for a manual remark.

HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE PAID FOR SEVERAL EXAMS WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE PASSED ON THE FIRST GO, AND GOT THE ANSWERS WRONG ONLY BECAUSE THE COMPUTER HAD THE WRONG BOX TICKED FOR THE CORRECT ANSWER.
lOTS OF $$$$$$$$$$ INVOLVED AND VERY EMBARRASSING FOR THE CONTRACTORS AND AUTHORITIES.

Is is this better or worse?

Also keep and eye on the news pages too http://www.aopa.com.au/cgi-bin/w3-ms...news_list.html

Sat an ATPL Instruments and Nav aids exam. Failed by one question. Asked for a recount 83NZD, applied to sit the exam on the next sitting 166NZD and just to top it all off, a late application fee of 40NZD. All up around $300. Nice work ASL.

Accompanying my request for a recount was a letter regarding a couple of questions. One was about a GPS error which the American Govt discontinued in year 2000. ASL are still asking the same question after THREE YEARS. Who is updating, reviewing, Changing these exams.

When I got the recount back, Came with a pass. Three hundred bucks refunded into the overdrawn bank account. WAAAHHHOOOO!!

ASL needs to pull finger if they are going to charge those sort of prices. Seems like they are making stack loads from uncurrent exam papers.

Anyway, alls well that ends well

Agree completely with you wizard though and like you I am sitting my second go at IREX in the next two weeks. The questions that I was told I got wrong I strongly believed that I got right however without any form of appeal I left it at that and resolved to study harder and make sure I got it right the next go. At first I believed my exam had been mixed with someone else's and that I had received someone else's mark.

Also agree in that some of the questions shouldn't be in certain exams, IREX seems more about the extent of your English and reading skills rather than how to safely and legally conduct an IFR flight. Taking 2 paragraphs to find out the speed allowed over the FAF in a Cat B aircraft is a bit much.

But seeing as I failed, I'm probably a bit biased

A bit more on cyber greek....a student had just sat the PPL exam. Some time later he/she asked "wot is balanced field length?" (a question in the exam). Well says I .....ASD, TOD etc,etc .(been there...done that) . In the end of a long discussion ..with little progress I said ...well if you land more than half way up the runway tips down and you end up in the trees. ...........
