Q- VB Flight into PER 16:30 today
Today at the mentioned time, a DJ 737 flew over my place, on a different approach path than usual into Perth from the N-E direction. I only noticed it because it was louder than a 737 usually sounds flying over my place. I went outside expecting to see a much bigger aircraft than what it turned out to be.
One thing I noticed is that it appeared to be flying with thrust reversers deployed. Again, I don't claim to be an expert on the subject, but from what I've read about other aircraft, isn't this supposed to cause problems? I'm assuming since they were still flying, it doesn't mean the same on this particular a/c (I have not personally seen reversers on DJ 737s up close) but is this usual? I have never noticed this before on other DJ aircraft passing.
Any help/answers appreciated!!!
Thanks,
SkySista

Where the "thrust reversers" on the wing?
The reason I ask is that I was wondering what you mean by thrust reversers. I suspect that you saw something completely different.
If you can describe in detail what you saw there are enough people here to give you a reasonably educated guess as to what it was you saw - I suspect that if the aeroplane didn't turn into a smoking heap of aluminium right in front of you it wasn't a thrust reverser....

Did you perhaps see a dark band around the engine? I once thought think this was a partially open cold stream reverser, when I took a closer look, it was just a blue painted band.
Maybe he got vectored to ******ry, hence had to add power to maintain altitude/profile?

Clarification...
>>>Where the "thrust reversers" on the wing?<<<
No, they weren't. I *do* know the difference between flaps, spoilers etc and reversers
Boomerang describes quite well what I saw, though I don't think that it was a painted band. I have seen photos on A.Net that describe this "dark band" (for lack of a better term) on other a/c as "reversers". Whether this means thrust reversers or cold stream reversers I don't know. Perhaps it is my mistake due to incomplete info. However these descriptions led me to believe that these were the reversers. As I said, I haven't noticed this before on passing 737s (and I've seen my fair share!) so was wondering what it was.
What it appeared to be was that the engine cowling was open towards the back, (not the blue painted band at the front) like a "ring" around the circumference of the engine and the dark area I assumed was everything underneath. Not very well explained but its the best I can do.

Perhaps if someone can tell me whether *thrust* reversers on 73s are wildly different to anything else (e.g. 747s - I have seen those) Reason I have not seen many is viewing from airport terminal is not that great for landings. I take it a "cold stream reverser" is somewhat different?

Probably not. But if you can tell me what I saw (re: A.Net picture) would be a great help.

There is a red line aft of the blue line on DJ cowls which may have been what you saw.It indicates the "ingestion danger zone" to ground crew. It's only about 100 mm wide though.Have to agree with Capt.Laptop about "the smoking heap of aluminium though.
Reminds me of the film footage when the USAF experimented with JATO "thrust reversers" on a C130 for some covert operation in the middle east.
The JATO bottles activated at around 40 feet AGL, aircraft stopped dead and Capt Gravity took command.
And the aircraft "turn(ed) into a smoking heap of aluminium right in front of" the camera!

Hmmmm.......
Well......
>>>sorry to insult you - but you have to ask!
The knowledge level of some of the people on this forum is a bit dubious.....<<<
It's ok, Capt. Laptop, I'm very rarely insulted. And I totally understand what you mean about *some* people on this board. It's not the "wannabes" that annoy me, it's the wannabes that aren't willing to admit they don't know half of what they pretend to or aren't willing to take advice/ opinions of the better informed among Proon's boards.
Which is why I think I'll defer to you guys - obviously was not a thrust reverser, though I could've sworn it was...
So. I'll just have to look harder next time. I'm happy to leave it at that.
Thanks for the opinions, guys, and for not telling me to go to the wannabes forum like some people would...
