If I (and most others) were to apply that theory (put family/loved one's first), I would have never got my first job, let alone turbine command, or even multi engine command.
Nor I, B_C_L - as a matter of fact I had to move interstate to start my flying training...some 8 years later "cracked" my first airline job...and have lived and worked in at least 6 different countries to continue flying.
On the other hand, I am friends with quite a few (non-scab) pilots who have not had to pack the dilly bag as often, and still maintained their career.
Conversely, others have jumped like fleas, to try to capitalise on every percieved career advancement opening.

Enjoy life at every opportunity - there's no guarantees about our tomorrows.
So unless you believe that THE job opportunity of a lifetime...the one that will allow you to retire within the next 3 years....demands you uproot family and home, seriously consider QUALITY of your current lifestyle.

TIMMEEEE, introducing the 'F' Factor is beyond the capabilities of any male. I've learnt that no matter which decision I make, it's ALWAYS the wrong one.
Why she didn't tell me at the time, is something I'm not game to ask HER...probably because she'll say, "You didn't ask me"...but then if I DID ask her (at the time), she would probably say, "Why are you asking ME??"

It's a win-win situation - for SheWhoMBO!!

Chaps from what I've heard your selection for Command Assessment at the big VB is nothing more than a lottery anyway.

Shudder the thought you are selected for assessment on the basis of who you know or where you last worked.

You chaps sure you don't want a seniority system ? The date of joining system must be frustrating if it fails to achieve equitable results for you.

Anyway, a few comments from afar. Good luck.

2XL.

If you are hearing things and believing them, it is because you are not there to experience them first hand and see the real story..

Commands are based on a number of factors, including length of service.

It is also based upon performance. Do a good job and it is your turn - you'll get the phone call. Do a lousy job and you won't.

And when I say do a good job I mean perform well on checks - both in the box and in the aeroplane.

It isn't a matter of who sucked up to whom, and a number of people have seemingly "jumped the que" however if you looked objectively at the people at the people who were "bypassed" you would see that there is a reason.

in some cases it is because they were rung up and asked if they were interested and they said not yet - a sign of significant maturity in my opinion, and that is a response that goes a long way - it certainly doesn't hold you back...

in other cases the overall experience on the jet may be such that another 6 months is needed to round out the picture.

And in others, if they were honest with themselves and others their check reports would tell the story. you cannot responsibly promote people who underperform. it isn't in the best interests of the individual, as to try and fail is worse than not having had a go. It is not in the interests of the airline because to have a person who is demonstrably a standards problem is a time bomb just waiting to go off.

And finally it isn't in the interests of the travelling public. Would YOU put your kids on an aeroplane under the command of a bloke who is marginal?

It is interesting, people whine about Virgin's lack of experience, and in the same breath whine about not promoting in straight line seniority....

Angry Captain Laptop

You say command/promotion is based on :
- length of service
- performance

I have personally witnessed the above to NOT always be the case, and sometimes IT IS the case of "sucking up".

Bagot - you might think it is this way - but I can assure you that the two people who dole out commands don't work that way.

I can only suggest that you may not be privy to some other factors.

Lightbulb

You get offered a command on Type "X" at Base "A" - course starts at 10.00am and Type "Y" at base "B" - course starts 2.00pm

Take the Command at 10.00am - the whole industry could be rooted by after lunch and all training for those not on course already stopped for 12 months +. It has happened many times before
