Jacobs Well Airport
I am curious if anyone knows anything about a proposal for a new aiport to be built at Jacobswell. From the information I have gathered I think it would be to survice both Brisbane and Goldcoat regions ie a major airport. As there seems to be quite some planning for expansion at the current Brisbane airport eg parallel runway and "Brisbane Airport City", I wonder if the JCW airport is still a possibility.

I don't know about what future developments there are there, but there is a small ALA there mostly focused on sport aviation. I had some students that had a nice little aeroplane there. All there is there are a few hangers and last time I heard they were going to build a club house and most importantly a bar. So as far as I know it is only for the hobby pilots and unfortunatly not for commercail operations. But then again I coulod be wrong.

I have heard recently from a friend who has some connections within the state government, and she tells me that there has been talk of this for a while. Not sure on what scale though, but it seemed that plans were to service at least regional size aircraft.

Thanks heaps. A friend not in the industry mentioned plans to me of a HUGE airport and complex and rail links etc and I seemed to think it was a bit too close too the current Brisbane airport to be correct but maybe some people may know the facts and then I can pass on the info.

My understanding is that the old DCA used to have quite a bit of land in the JCW area (Commonwealth or Crown land) which was originally set aside for possible use as a future airport. This land was acquired just after WW2 but following the redevelopment of Brisbane Airport in the 1980's this never went ahead.
I'm not sure of the current status of the land there now, given the infrastructure money that's poured into Brisbane by the industry and present owner over the last 15 years, it is difficut to imagine it being shut down, and Coolangatta's passenger numbers are climbing although its GA activity is a shadow of what it was in the'70s.

There IS a strip at JCW called "Heck"... cut into the cane fields a half-mile or so from the navaids. As stated above there is a number of hangers and from memory, 2 gravel strips. Can't remember length but landed a C182 comfortably there last October.
Likewise, there is a very very rough strip at BIK, or nearby. Haven't been there myself but the PPRuNer calling himself "BIK116.8" aparrently has. The strip used to serve a village there (I forget its name but it featured on the ABC's "Australian Story" last year) which was cut off by the rising waters of Lake Burragorang back when the dam was built.

Elk, Are you talking about Yerranderie? Call that a strip? Rough aint the word! Slopes in both directions, one steeper than the other, very turbulent on windy days. Beautiful setting though, great fauna and flora - mostly on the strip. A bit rough, short and high for a 4 up C172....

The AOPA airfields directory offered this in 2000:

WAC 3340 27deg46'S 153deg 20'E
...yada yada yada...
Runways 10/28 Grass/Gravel 700m. (RWY 18/36 Grass/Gravel due for completion mid 1998)...Navaids: VOR JCW 116.8 (500m N).
No details on Yerranderie (reference to which I couldn't find in the Aus Story archives either).
