New years in Cairns
I have a charter to Cairns on new years eve and was hoping for some local information on where to stay ie a back packers which is close to the action and hopefully the airport.

Try Fitzroy Island....
Not sure of the prices and times this year but last years info...
$25ish for the ferry leaving around 1900 from CNS. 40 min ferry ride to fitzroy island backpackers resort. On a beach, palmtrees everywhere, extra bars etc and a target rich environment. There would have been several hundred people there.
Ferry returns to CNS at 0200 and 0300. There is another one back at 0900 as well if you are unconscious or otherwise occupied on the beach in the wee hours.

1. Apres Beach Bar and Grill – Palm Cove, fireworks, live music, bus service from Cairns all night. But you will have to book. www.beachbar.com.au
2. The Chapel (in town)
3. Frog and Toad (The ultimate bar hop). They will take you to 5 bars and the last one will give you a view of the NYE fireworks on the Esplanade.
4. The Sports Bar (The 5 Finger Ball)
There are obviously plenty more, but even if you cruise on down to the Esplanade on the waterfront, you wont be far from a lot of the action and there are backpacker joints within walking distance.
