Overseas License Conversion to CASA

Hi everyone,
I want to convert my overseas ATPL License to CASA ATPL or CPL. I have gone through the CASA sight and checked for the process. But there are a few doubts in my mind. If anyone can clear that, I shall be grateful.
1. Which visa type do I need to come to Australia and apply for my conversion?? (Can it be a normal Visit Visa or any special visa type is required? i.e Study visa etc)
2. Should I go for ATPL conversion or is CPL conversion recommended??
I have neither a visa or PR of Australia nor a work permit. So I need your complete guidance to go through it.
Thanks

Moved from Airline and RPT Rumours & News in Australia, enZed and the Pacific. Read the forum headings for the correct forum before you post.

Your questions are not aviation related and you need advice from a qualified migration consultant. Whilst a sub Class 600 Tourist/Visitors Visa permits some limited study, the principal purpose for your travel must be for tourism. You do not qualify for a Visitors Visa if your sole purpose of travel is study and obtaining a qualification. You have a high chance of being turned around at the arrival airport, sent back and become a prohibited arrival for three years.

I'm not an expert but I suspect you may need to find a flight school with CRICOS approval and possibly a Student Visa??

If you don't have Australian residency or citizenship there is no point in converting the licence.

The mere fact of holding a CPL or ATPL will not qualify you for Australian temporary or permanent residence or approval to work. "Pilot" is no longer on the Skills Shortage list. To obtain a Visa enabling work in Australia you would need an alternate valid reason - Australian Spouse; company sponsorship (extremely unlikely in the airline industry); immediate family sponsorship etc.

Adding to the above, there is NO pilot shortage in Australia! When you read bs saying that there is a pilot shortage, it's only because some operators don’t want to provide induction training, and/or set the bar too high. These operators tend to become more flexible when they need to, so the number of CPL holders always exceeds the job vacancies. You can find plenty of threads on how hard it is for pilots to get their first job in Australia.

I am not sure I am in agreement with you - Occupation 231111 aircraft pilot does appear to be in the skills shortage list and a quick search indicates there are a number of visa options, primarily if going regional.
  • 489 - Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489) - State or Territory nominated
  • 482 - Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) – Medium Term Stream
    report caveats apply
  • 187 - Regional Sponsor Migration Scheme (subclass 187)
  • 494 - Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (provisional) (subclass 494) - Employer sponsored stream
  • 491 - Skilled Work Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 491) State or Territory nominated
  • 186 - Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186) - Transition Pathway
