Question re altimeter units in Oz

When I got into Australian aviation in the early 1980s, altimeter settings were in hPa.

Was there ever a time when we used inches of mercury instead (as our US cousins still do)? Prior to the main metrication changeover around 1974 perhaps?

Thanks.

I recall a bit of a laugh going into a Japanese airport whose ATIS gave the QNH in ‘hectoPassikles’.

Having said that, their English was far better than our Japanese.

When the changeover from millibars to hectopascals came in 1986 or 87 (the memory fades) It fell under my duty statement to alert ADF personnel so I composed a message to do so.

In those days there was a limit on the characters or lines (again, the memory fades) for each page of a message so I rambled on with information on the change until the message got to the bottom of page one: " ... the conversion factor to be used in converting QNH, QFE and (again memory fade) from millibars to Hectopascals is ...
END PAGE ONE
ALL THE USUAL MESSAGE BLURB
START PAGE TWO
ALL THE MESSAGE HEADERS
.. 1 (one).
message ends.

Another visit to the Chief's office to be told, "Very funny but no-one appreciates a smart arse.."
Right up there with authorising an entry in the Richmond FLIP aerodrome supplement advising the closure of the Officers' Mess back bar as a result "of reckless driving and youthful exuberance".

Devil

Like when GMT became UTC, supposedly because the Crapauds didn't like the Universal Time named after somewhere in Pommyland!

And it's still GMT AFAIC.

I'll invite Gne to explain the conversion factor from GMT to UTC, Pinky...

Gne
IIRC it was due to "poorly planned and ill-advised drag race around the married patch".

Not quite! GMT is a time zone, it uses a mean. UTC is stateless, and is very accurate. Thus the two are, strictly, quite different, albeit in practice there's not a lot between them.

Where the French come in, as I understand it, is that they wanted TUC (Temps Universel Coordonné) as opposed to CUT (Coordinated Universal Time), the compromise was UTC.

What is the conversion factor or formula to convert from GMT to UTC or vice versa?

Thought someone else might answer ... in practice I believe it's essentially 0, although at various times I imagine there'd be a few seconds between them.
