The parallels between two accidents. Aeroperu B757 in 1996 & Lion Air Oct 2018

The recent Lion Air crash at Jakarta continues to be discussed comprehensively on Pprune Rumours and News forum. The reason for the accident is not known yet but the possibility of a blocked static vent will no doubt be considered.

In October 1996, an Aeroperu Boeing 757 crashed under similar circumstances except the take off was at night and not at sea level.
In that accident the static vents were found to be covered by tape during maintenance. The following link is to the CVR read-out of the Aeroperu 757. It reveals the utter confusion in the cockpit caused by erroneous instrument indications that occurred shortly after lift off. This seems to parallel the situation faced by the Lion Air crew.

It seems all too easy to bag both crews for not going back to basics; especially since the artificial horizons on the 757 were evidently not affected. But when you read the CVR English translation print-out below, it is also easy to understand how sensory overload can overwhelm common sense. Take the time to read the transcription. It doesn't take long...

Centaurus,
I remember watching that episode of ACI and wondered the same thing when snippets of information came filtering out from the media and the erratic airspeed and altitude that allegedly occurred as reported by Flight Aware.
Only difference I guess is that they are saying a similar issue occurred on a previous flight with the same aircraft so might still be a pitot / static system problem but not as obvious.
