I remember watching that episode of ACI and wondered the same thing when snippets of information came filtering out from the media and the erratic airspeed and altitude that allegedly occurred as reported by Flight Aware.
Only difference I guess is that they are saying a similar issue occurred on a previous flight with the same aircraft so might still be a pitot / static system problem but not as obvious.
