It is simple in Australia you pay a full time employee all but 2,000 hrs per year. so if a hour rate is required $50,000 is almost $25 per hr and packing shelf at woolis 8 year ago was $16.50 + ot as applicable (sunday = $32.)

I had thought for a moment that you might have been someone else but perhaps I'm mistaken. I hope I am however the cracks will soon appear if I'm not...
You do however seem to me like the kind of person who is a bit rare these days in that you take a keen interest in the obvious financial risk that comes along with your profession and adopts (it would appear) a common sense approach to manage that risk. It's either that or your years of experience and exposure to the financial side of the engineering world have scarred you. Anyway I'm impressed but it is a shame you are no longer able to share your knowledge with the young ones......
Have you done the APS course re engine management ? Even though your focus is no doubt turbine related I reckon you'd have a lot to share. I think there's one on around Brisbane somewhere early 2016.....

Why is the hourly rate so high?
but its an insight all the same.

that over simplifies it, and puts you on the back foot immediately.
Sure you pay your worker 1950 hours per year, but in the formula as presented you have only 1320 hours actual production time.
Take a look at the chargable hours section. You can poke and modify that to suit your business/industry/state laws.
I'm not saying this formula is 100% correct, but it is certainly more accurate than Hours paid per year versus hourly rate paid.
Based on that premise, you are paying 630 hours that you have not collected money for.
Thats just how i am interpreting it. If someone beleives it to be wrong, i am MORE than happy read, crunch numbers and learn something.
