I have nothing but admiration and respect for someone that leads like that. Such a stark contrast to the likes of Alan Joyce.

I suspect in their culture position and humility determines status more than money+power in ours.

Can any Japanese experts back me up there or am I way off the mark?

An interesting thing I did hear about Japanese culture was on a Freakonomics podcast about family run businesses. Worldwide about ~20% of kids are drop kicks incapable of running the family business but in Japan it turns out the family businesses are much more successful at maintaining their legacy than USA. So they looked into why.

It turns out if you are Mr Kawasaki and your sons are dip ****s, you can adult-adopt another son. It's fully legal and a great honour for the family of the adoptee. And solves the idiot problem by taking on a competent son to maintain the business in your family name.
