Buying Avionics And AIrcraft Stuff In Australia?
I've just about had it with Australian Aviation suppliers with the exception of Horsham Aviation and one or Two others.
Here I am, with a pocket full of money. I want radios and a transponder. I want to be complaint with what CASA and AsA tell me I must comply with.
Do you think anyone will answer my emails, make a simple exposition of what is required and make me a unique selling proposition and take my money? Nope.
I toy at the high end with a Garmin GTN 635, "buy Icom" others say, its cheap, but the Icom 210 is not certified or for sale in Australia. The Skyview isn't compliant (yet). Trig transponders have gone off the radar and apparently aren't complaint thanks to a built in encoder.
Then there is the " don't worry about CASA" brigade. Fit anything you like and never mind they say. That works real well until it doesn't. If CASA turns up at a fly in with a list of whats TSO'd and what is not, how many aircraft are going to be grounded on the spot?
...And thats just avionics! Then just try and get aircraft paint out of PPG. The ladies at airport metals are good, but is it any wonder that I keep going back to Aircraft Spruce?
I think I'll just spring for a Garmin GTN635, a Garmin remote transponder and maybe a trig second radio, all bought from Aircraft Spruce and to hell with Australian industry!

Arn't you building Sunny? Avd can't non TSO stuff be fitted to expiremental? I don't know myself but someone here should.
That said, long ago I gave up on Aussie aviation businesses, they don't want our business. The Americans are far more reliable, answer emails, ship fast and are a pleasure to do business with. Only pity is the freight but given the cheaper prices still worth it.
My sentiments too.

We are getting all our aircraft up to the new certification by buying all second hand, as the fleet of wealthy private aircraft go for the latest bells and whistles after being scared by the sound non compliant or talked into a total upgrade by salesman and flash marketing.
Our avionics guy is amazed how much green tagged relatively new avionics is being removed, when really all they needed was a mode S transponder. We have even picked up a couple of Garmin 330ES that were removed after only being installed at the end of the last financial year. Always look around for deals straight after the start of new financial year when the need for new expense's against their toys are at a premium.
Most of our fleet has avionics in now that 5 years ago we could only dream about but never afford. Thanks to all of you out there, that like all the newest fruit with bells and whistles for doing your bit to keep us struggling operators in business. Don't know how we could have afforded the upgrades otherwise.

The sad reality is there is a shortage of Avionics LAMEs, so they always have lots of work and don't need to chase customers.
The Seinfeld episode "Soup Nazi" is a bit like dealing with Avionics LAMEs.
The two Avionics LAMEs I've dealt with have both been very good once they get moving, but don't expect the same type of customer service you'd get at Myers.
I've got an Icom A210 in my plane, which is Night VFR, and love it. There are dozens of settings in the A210 software and it takes a while to get it configured to your tastes.

You must have a TSO'ed radio for NVFR.
I would suggest that you put in a call to your friendly avionics LAME and check. Unless of course you fitted this radio yourself and didn't realise?

My Icom A210 was installed by an Avionics LAME at Moorabbin, who also installed the KLN94 GPS. Avionics LAME also organised the EO. Very solid and tidy installation. Dave is good to deal with.
Installing the TSO 129 GPS and alternate static source were the last steps required to get the plane signed off as NVFR.
All documented and flying very well, thank you.
