Tasmania, 100 Years of Aviation

From the Mercury
Jets headline show as aerial display salutes our first flight | The Mercury

ALMOST 100 years ago the first powered flight took to the skies above Tasmania. Today the anniversary is being celebrated at the Royal Hobart Showground, which was the launch pad for the first flight.
The skies will come alive with aerial displays, while there will be extensive historic shows on the ground.
Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania CEO Scott Gadd said the event would be a free, fun day for families and anyone interested in aviation.
“It’s a significant milestone we are celebrating,’’ he said.
“The first powered flight in Tasmania fascinated people, it was a time when their eyes were really becoming awakened to the world.”
Mr Gadd said it had been a long time since such a complex air display had been on show in Hobart. From 10.45am three Hawk 127 jets, from Number 79 Squadron at RAAF Base Pearce in WA, will perform a fly-past from the northeast.
The RAAF’s aerobatic display team, the Roulettes, will perform breathtaking displays at speeds of up to 590km/h. Local flight company, Par Avion, will co-ordinate an air show at 1pm, while at 2pm Hobart legend and pilot Stan Tilley will give a spectacular aerobatic display.
Showground attractions will include Anglesea Barracks Museum, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and a Royal Australian Navy static display.
