Converting to CASA CPL

Hello all. I'm looking to convert my overseas licence to a CASA CPL, and have (after many hours of looking at the details) finally figured out the reference material I need to get hold of in order to sit for the Air Law exam. I'm going to put in an order for the set of AIP, CAO, CAR, ERSA, VTC, and ERC from the Airservices website, but before doing that I wanted to confirm whether I need to get hold of the standard CAO text along with all the amendments or will just the main text suffice?

As per the ASA website at the moment the following amendments are available-

CAO Amendments 20 - 95 (95.4(1))
CAO Amendments 20 - 95 (82.0 (2), 82.3 (1), 82.5 (2))
CAO Amendments 20 - 95 [20.18(1)]
CAO Amendments 20 - 95 [40.1.0(1), 40.3.0(1), 48.1(1), 95.4.1(1)]
Civil Aviation Orders Amdt 100 [100.5]

Not sure about the last one, is that required? The CASA website lists CAO 20-95.2 as being needed for the exam.

With the CARs I'm a bit confused about which one to purchase -

Civil Aviation Regulations - Text (NEW TEXT JULY 2013)
OR
Full Release of Civil Aviation Regulations 1988 & Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998 Amendments

With the ERSA having looked at the options here (https://www.airservicesaustralia.com...ype=c&stext=ES)
I trust this - ERSA Spiral Bound with RDS - Effective 22 August 2013
should cover the whole thing including all the latest amendments, correct?

Good day razzy.!

To get a conversion of your foreign CPL license to CASA CPL you'll need complete both
CPL AIR LAW & CPL HUF.

The documents required for the CPL air law exam are as follows from the CASA website;

Airservices List
CAR 1988
CAO 20-95.2 (Including Amendments)
AIP Book
ERSA complete
AUS PCA
ERC LOW 1/2 and 3/4 only (2 ERC Lows)
Hobart/Launceston VTC
Brisbane-Sunshine Coast/Gold Coast VTC
No other references or material permitted

So a CASR isn't required for the exam and Therefore not permitted.

Good luck with it all.

T&G.

Dont worry about Amendments or Amendment Orders. Just go to the list of CAOs and print off all the relevant ones in that range. Of particular interest are 20.7.1B, 20.11, 20.18, 20.9, 40.0, 40.1.0, 40.2.1, 48.1.

Ignore anything that is not relevant to your exam (ie, heli/airship/gyroplane, agricultural, sling loads, etc)

Touch & Go, Lasiorhinus

Thanks a bunch for your inputs! I'll ignore the CASR and CAO other than the ones listed as being required in the Air Law exam then.

slatanmhor, Yes, the EASA license is indeed a foreign license, so you will need to go through the same conversion process.

Do you actually hold an ATPL, though? You mentioned "frozen", which implies that you do not hold an ATPL yet - in which case you will only be able to convert your CPL.

Alright, I have a strange problem with the Airservices material I ordered.

I've got the ERSA+RDS which is spiral bound. Planning to print the CAR myself in A4 and use a standard A4 3-ring arch binder for it.The CAO and AIP however are loose leafs and I can't seem to find a binder that fits the ring-holes that have been punched into them at the time of publication. The standard 2 or 3 D-ring binders in A5 or A4 sizes do not fit either the CAO or the AIP leaves. Which binders do I need to get that will fit these docs? I have neither been able to find any 7 ring binders for the AIP, nor any 3 ring binders for the CAO.

Yeah - that seems to be a CASA (or at least gov) special. You can get the binders from CASA or a pilot shop - and at least you don't have to renew those.

You shouldn't find the exams too difficult. The CASA exams are as much about English comprehension, so read the questions very carefully and think about what parts of the syllabus (download from web) they are really asking about. Some sample questions from Bob Tait/ATC/etc are very helpful.

And hunt around for CAAPs etc on the CASA web site. There's a little bit of stuff on TEM (and more on skybrary.aero) that will be helpful for HUF.

Good luck.
