Vale Captain Paul Anniss
It is with the deepest personal regret that I wish to advise of the untimely passing of Captain Paul Anniss.
Paul did sterling duty at Airlines of South Australia, Ansett (until its demise), Qantas (as a sim instructor) and Jetstar.
He was a loyal friend, a consummate aviation professional, and a great family man.
Rest peacefully my friend; god knows, you've earned the right to after the battle you've just gone through. Blue skies and happy landings from here-on in.
"Fly West"
I hope there's a place, way up in the sky
Where pilots can go when they have to die.
A place where a guy could buy a cold beer
For a friend and a comrade whose memory is dear.
A place where no doctor or lawyer could tread,
Nor a management-type would e'ler be caught dead!
Just a quaint little place, kind of dark, full of smoke,
Where they like to sing loud, and love a good joke.
The kind of a place that a lady could go
And feel safe and secure by the men she would know.
There must be a place where old pilots go,
When their wings become heavy, when their airspeed gets low,
Where the whiskey is old, and the women are young,
And songs about flying and dying are sung.
Where you'd see all the fellows who'd 'flown west' before,
And they'd call out your name, as you came through the door,
Who would buy you a drink, if your thirst should be bad,
And relate to the others, "He was quite a good lad!"
And there, through the mist, you'd spot an old guy
You had not seen in years, though he'd taught you to fly.
He'd nod his old head, and grin ear to ear
And say, "Welcome, my Son, I'm proud that you're here!
For this is the place where true flyers come
When the battles are over, and the wars have been won.
They've come here at last, to be safe and alone,
>From the government clerk, and the management clone;
Politicians and lawyers, the Feds, and the noise,
Where all hours are happy, and these good ol' boys
Can relax with a cool one, and a well deserved rest!
This is Heaven, my Son. You've passed your last test!"

I didn't like Paul the first time I flew with him.
But then I soon realized I had it wrong. He was different and I would suggest had more depth than many people.
Then I enjoyed flying with him immensely. We would ponder the universe and talk about life and happiness instead of unions and salary.
I raise a glass of fine red tonight, and shed a small tear.

Very sad news. Paul was a highly respected Check Captain - very thorough when checking. If you got your 4 bars from Paul, you well and truly deserved them.

Sorry to hear it.
Paul did have a bit of a rep, but I approached all my flying and checks with him with an open mind.
Hard, I imagine, but only on those who deserved it.
Enjoyed my contact with him and agree that if you got your 4th bar from him, it wouldn't have been a freebee.

Just learnt of Paul's passing today. I had not seen or spoken with Paul for 24 years but I still remember him well from the RHS of the B737. RIP mate.

Paul Anniss .
A dear friend and some great memories.
Always ready to lend an ear to listen to the problems of others while carrying quite a burden himself. He didn't say much about his own problems but, he was always there for me and mine with a smile and with words of wisdom.
Paul's standards were high but, he would never expect anything from someone if he couldn't do it himself. In fact he didn't necessarily require
people to perform to his level, just the required level.
He said to me more than once that he never failed someone, they had failed themselves. I use the same reasoning.
Did he suffer fools? No way.
Try to pull the wool over his eyes and you would soon be found out .
Do your best and you would be praised for doing so.
Paul was reserved but, he also was accepting, trusting,an extremely dedicated family man to Bernie and Robert, certainly supportive of me and, just plain decent.
Paul fought his many personal battles constantly but, quietly and the same way he approached aviation, with determination.
That was Paul Anniss.
I sit he trying to remember what he ever asked of me over 20 years and frankly, I am at a loss.
Farewell dear friend.
Looking forward to meeting again.
