Aussies flying in Europe..

Hey Guys just wanted to know if any of you have gone over to Europe to fly before? If so how did you go about obtaining your JAA-licenses, Was it worth it? Was it to bloody expensive? Is their any way around having to sit all those painful exams and flight tests?

On the side just as a teary... why the don't they accept an Aussie ATPL with just a law exam to convert... Why all these extra exams and flight tests? Isn't Australia's flight testing and exams stringent enough?

Just wanted to hear your experiences and thoughts

I'm european and I don't like some exams. For example, why the hell should I know how does a heart or eye work??? As a pilot I know I will never operate on a passenger

Anyway, do you have the right to live and work in Europe?

Mate,

had all the aussie licenses and theory completed. I was instructing and then did the JAAs over at WAAC perth and came over to EU in 2007.. been here since. Bit of work, effort and cash, but i have nil regrets. Went through all the hoops... if you want more specific info PM me.

Echoing Jerry Lee, how does one get the right to work in Europe if you don't have a Euro passport? I would have thought it would nigh on impossible to get a prospective employer to jump through the hoops and arrange a work permit for you...

One of the most known way to is to get married with an european girl, maybe polish

Seriously now, I really don't know anything how to get a permanent residency in Europe, I think it changes from country to country, but it is surely easier than get a Permanent Residence in Oz.

I've done it and so has Checkboard.

If you don't have a Euro passport then you'll need to get a visa. Ancestral visa is the "easiest" way.

Ok, if you don't want to do the massive 14 exams.
You'll need to have over 1500 hours in command of 30+ tonne aircraft and a total time of at least 3000 hours. However, you'll be restricted to a UK CAA issued JAA ATPL. This means you can't fly a non G-reg aircraft until you do the rest of the exams. Fun.
LASORS gives good advice about what's required.
Oh, at first glance, looks like that option will no longer be available.
See G1.5 Note 2.

If you don't have that, then yep, it's the full ball ache 14 exams.

Depending on where you are experience wise it'll be a skill test observed by the CAA in a sim, an IR and CPL done or type rating with the LST observed by an examiner from the CAA.


It's an interesting market "here" at the moment. However, if you cannot get a visa/passport, then it's a moot point.
