Insurance
Hey Guys,
I am aware that operators carry "carriers liability insurance" but what other types of insurance do the operators typically carry, if any?
I would imagine they insure the aircraft, and in the case of xhired aircraft the owner would insure the aircraft.
Always wondered if they under insure and what not.

Azzure,
Don't even think about flying any aircraft, particularly a hire from a school or individual, until you have the fine print deciphered 100%.
All to often, with a hire, the owner/operator is covered, gets paid out in the event of damage, then the insurance co. comes after the hirer. Remember, all the usual insurance consumer protection laws do not apply to aviation.
Be very, very careful, there are some real horror stories in the "real world".
Tootle pip!!

MANY flying schools don't insure their aircraft.
MANY commercial operators don't insure their aircraft either.
That's HULL insurance... then there's passenger liability and many don't have that either!
READ the fine print before hiring an aircraft so that you have a clear understanding of what you are up for.
I once started flying at a school and on the first day they made me sign an agreement that I would pay the $2k excess in a crash. At the time you don't think much of it if you know nothing about flying.

Be careful! I was recently surprised to learn that a most reputable flying school didn't have any insurance, at all. During an interview and company check I was told how they "self insure"....and was told "if you bend it you buy it"...and you'll sign such an agreement following your employment as a sub-contractor. To add salt to my wound I was then presented with a tax invoice for just under $400 for the check flight...nice!

VH-XXX,
Mate are you sure about what you are saying? I would be extremely surprised to find an AOC holder, "Commercial Operator", who does not insure. For a start they can't legally operate without coverage under the Carriers Liability act and I don't know of any insurance company that would sell that coverage without insisting that they have hull coverage for that particular aircraft. CASA requires that you submit proof of insurance each year or at least they used to as far as I know.
Groggy

XXX you're talking out your fundament.
CASA require evidence to be submitted every year that you meet the requirements of the Carrier's Liability Act and our insurance company has some strong requirements regarding what we insure, for what, and who gets waivers for which bits.
No Govt dept or major corporation will ever charter an aircraft without significant documentation proving AOCs, insurance, pilot experience, currency etc.
...maybe it's diferent for your Jab, XXX.

Groggy & HLB, sorry you have assumed incorrectly about my post. To your credit, it wasn't overly clear.
MANY flying schools don't insure their aircraft - Both RAA and GA. Be careful to ensure you are insured during flying lessons etc.
MANY commercial operators don't insure their aircraft either. GA. Hull insurance is not a requirement.
That's HULL insurance... then there's passenger liability and many don't have that either! Many RAA schools don't have any insurance, on hull or passenger liability.
What you say about GA Commercial operators is indeed correct as per the original poster "I am aware that operators carry "carriers liability insurance," I can read after all.
