Holy S##T is aviation worth it?

Guy's,

I have been reading all the forums that you have put up here over the past few months. No one seems to be happy at all. This is concerning for me as I am studing my ass off to return back to the industry after a two year break.
Is it all that bad, should a guy just walk away and never come back to it. I know the money is not as good as it once was but your still getting paid for what you really love doing.

So is it worth it?

aviation is a cruel mistress. You work your arse off and generally don't see much in return.

BUT, then again, your doing something only few dream about doing. You get to meet many different and intersting characters, find life long friends and if its your passion then you can put up with all that ****.

Honestly, i'd wouldn't change my job for the world and I reckon most on here, deep down, are the same

For the past 12 months I've been loving it- not once have I woken up and thought "I don't want to go to work today, I've had enough of this".

18/24 months ago however, now that was a different story! Flying busted-arse aircraft for a company that didn't repect you, didn't progress you (however they would promise you the world), paid average and living in a remote crudhole gets you down. However it served it's purpose and I made great mates and remember the fun times!

Now though, I'm getting paid reasonably well (my bank balance is going up faster than I can normally spend so that must be good!), get treated well, flying good machines that rarely break down and any minor issues are sorted without hassle.

Finding a place that suits you and where you enjoy working is the key. Unfortunately it may take a while slogging thru all the sh*t to get there.

Is Aviation worth it? depends on your currency. if you want a challenge, and satisfaction, then most definitely, if your after financial reward, Hell No.

and whats with this no one seams happy? i have met a tonne of happy people in this industry, most are, its only the unhappy ones that are the most vocal on an anonymous internet web forum., as most in the industry dont put up with their whinging in real life.

Just remember: Most happy pilots do not log on to pprune everyday and start threads about how awesome their job is.

Hence the slightly skewed opinion present on this site.

That said, don't ignore what you read here, just take it was one side of a greater story.

that's a question i've been asking myself over the past 6.5 years......I first got involved with the industry in 2004, took a break after 2006 and found it difficult to get back in. Now I am doing some aviation related job, though not flying but I still find it challenging.......but i gotta agree if you're after money, then it's just enough to survive ,if you ask me whether or not it's worth it, then I'd probably say yes.

Have a read of the history of the AFAP "A Federation of Pilots" and have a look at how pilots were treated back in the late 40's and 50's.

But for Chr!st sake don't show it to any airline management. They're already going hell bent for leather trying to send us back to the dark ages, and unfortunately we still have some way to go.

On a positive note, I absolutely love my job, and couldn't imagine doing anything else. it is however a constant battle against those who have no idea, or even worse have forgotton what the profession is all about. Hense all the bitching!

YES!!!

It's the greatest job there is, it's pilots that ruin it.

90% of them are D***heads, and they are mostly the ones posting on this site.

Having said that, some of my best mates are pilots, but they are in the 10% of good blokes.

Definately worth it

I have the greatest job in the world!!!

Do I whinge?? Hell yes!!!
Once you've emptied everything on your tray, read the newspapers and maybe traded GA war-ies with the guy sitting next to you - it regularly turns to company whinging.
But like a squaddie, honking about management is a pilots god given right!!
It doesn't mean we are miserable - just bored!!

Get back into it and dont look back.
If you work hard (and be SMART about your choices) you'll end up make a good living off it.

Management are wankers but I dont care because those miserable buggers are stuck on the ground. Oh and did I mention that they are miserable?? Having their crappy lives is definately worth them having a better staff travel ranking than my 50.....

Sometimes Im tired, bored and I pray to God to end it all when my wake up call comes through at some ungodly hour. But theres something about flying that makes it all worth it.........not sure what it is, but it gets me every time.

Get back into it and dont look back.

I f#$%ing love my job!!

Yes it is worth it. I would rather fly a Cessna or a KingAir around beautiful country all day rather than sit in front of a computer at an office.

On the other hand, paying a sh#*load of money to an LCC for the privilege of flying while being paid peanuts, like the cadet-ship program, is NOT worth it.

YES

Depending whether you do something/work for yourself or are in employment, the old adage.."How to make a small fortune in Aviation, start with a big one"
might apply.
I started with nothing and Ive still got some of it left.!
Integrity intact but a lifetime of great experiences, in spite of being fcuked over (twice) by CASA.

Seriously... If it's your dream, obsession, and you love doing it. GO FOR IT.
May not have the final desired outcomes, but at least you followed yr dream.
And you wont regret it.

If you just want money over job satisfaction; not recommended. Plenty of other fields of "endeavour" for that.

Enjoy...!!

Of course it's worth it.

Most pilots on here are lame losers who like to complain and be negative towards the wannabes (crushing their dreams etc).

All you have to do is man up and don't be a baby.

The question is, is PPRune worth it?

Answer: Negative

It's the best industry to work in, bar none.

I spent my younger years in the RAAF. Nothing beats climbing at 28000 f.min.. Flying at Mach 1.6 and seeing the curvature of the earth...

I have been in the 'real world' for a while now. The planes aren't as flash, but the flying is still fun. Most people who work in this industry do so because they love it. This includes pilots, engineers and ops!!

Yeah, there are a few whingers around. Generally speaking, their bad experiences are a result of their own negativity, No sympathy.
