I did mine at RAAF AMBERLEY back in the days when pigs really did fly!

I should have joined but seemed to have done ok despite the alternate career.

See if you can get a go at a base near home. They had me in the tower a fair bit and that was a good view. I was issuing clearances towards the later part of the week. Not likely to happen these days

Try a flying school at Moorabbin or Essendon whichever is closest. By the end of a week if they are nice people you might get a ride.

I was issuing clearances towards the later part of the week.
I had to complete some work experience paperwork for a couple of kids in a non-aviation setting and noticed one of the listed tasks that students were not allowed to perform was 'air traffic control duties'. We all had a laugh about it at the time, but it seems like there was a reason for it ...

To the OP, maybe call the Melbourne Airport operator (APAC I believe?); they may have a work experience programme and if not, they may know who does. Good luck finding something cool.

Hi DK08,

Welcome to PPRuNe!! When I was in high school I tried to do a similar thing, however, the schools' liability insurance policy didn't cover such things as airports. Before you organise any work experience, it might be a good idea to check with your school if they will authorise you to work at an airport.

HomeJames.

Straight home and don't spare the horses.

When I was school a bloke did work experience with a helicopter maintenance outfit. Reckoned it was pretty good fun, and when they did test flights they took him for a ride.

I did year 10 work experience a couple of years ago at the Qantas jetbase at Mascot - it was a really great experience visiting all the different sections (including sim sessions ). I expect there's not such a substantial outfit at Tullamarine though.

Thats interesting about the liability insurance. I know that a lot of schools stipulate that under no circumstances is the student allowed to actually fly in an aircraft.

I did my work experiance in a heavy maintenance facility for 2 weeks. It got me an apprenticeship Unfortunately a lot of companies see work experiance kids as simply free labour.... the last few I saw cleaned aircraft parts the whole time! Or sweep the hangar.

I recently did my work experience here in Sydney with Rex. Generally they are willing to accommodate you, make your own way to the airport though. The stuff you will do include check in agent and gate agent work mainly, tagging bags, calling flights, scanning boarding passes etc. Occasionally there would be tarmac stuff like unaccompanied minors and this is a good chance to talk to the pilots as you go up next to the aircraft. There might be other stuff like tarmac tours and drive-bys of the heavies parked near International if you're lucky.

Also they will generally organise a flight for you, nomally up to their base in WGA but sometimes to other destinations if all the Wagga flights are at capacity. It should be good fun, just pop them an email.

Cheers

work experience

Try calling the flying schools at Moorabbin and ask for the CFI. Im sure if you call them all, one of them will oblige. The key here is to really make sure you call them all. Peter Bini, Moorabbin Flying Services, Tristar, Moorabbin Aviation Services, Royal Victorian Aero Club, Oxford Flight Training and Melbourne Flight Training.

Some things to consider.

As mentioned earlier check that the your school will allow such work experience.

I also suggest you try and get the work experience during the better weather when there is a bit more activity.

Thirdly apply for an ARN (licence number) via a form 1162 from the CASA website. There is no charge for the form and a 498 or 499 (sorry i forget the correct form) for the student pilot licence. If you have these you may have the option to backseat flights as a member of the operating crew rather than as a passenger. You will need to be 16 or above however so consider that in your timing.

If the school has a problem with you participqating in flight activities you could perhaps nominate the work experience hours as 9.00 AM to 1.00 PM meaning that after 1.00PM you become Jo Citizen rather than Jo Student. If you go down that path i think the flying school would want verification from your school and also from your parents.

Im sure if you ring all of the schools one of them would be keen to assist you but i really think you need to get on to the CFI rather than one of the instructional staff. Perhaps even mention you got the advice off of Pprune.

Good luck. Cheers. Glen

I am in the same situation as you and all these answers have been a great help to me also, so thanks guys
I was just wondering in regards to Belfordsrock's comment "Also they will generally organise a flight for you, nomally up to their base in WGA but sometimes to other destinations if all the Wagga flights are at capacity" does this mean that if you get a placement with them or work experience they will fly you up to Wagga or wherever else is free from Melbourne? It almost seems to good to be true... I went onto the Rex website to get contact information and was also wondering whether or not to contact the Sydney base because I live in Melbourne? Would it be better if I went into the airport and spoke to a customer service person?
Sorry for all the questions,
Thanks for your help

Many years ago I had a number of work experience folks come through the flying school.

The school had very specific rules that no flying be done during school hours. After that however you're free. we required parental consent and the usual rules of pax carrying on training flights applies so no OEI/VMCA demos.

The guys found it pretty good as they sat in on a number of briefings (provided the real student is happy of course) so they were actually learning something too. Fire out emails or the old fashioned telephone call.

Good luck and beware of pilots.....most of what we say is true.....some of it definatley isnt.

beware of pilots.....most of what we say is true.....some of it definitely isnt.
The trick is to be able to learn how to tell between the two!

Good luck.

My niece recently did work experience at the Metologial office which was on the airport. Since they rarely get work experiance kids they gave her the full run down on weather. After a week of that she is telling me about whats happening with weather!

I have seen work placement kids come to work places wanting to see the pilots life . If they are lucky they get a flight during the week . Otherwise they listen to pilot talk or get shoved out with the engineers.

You would learn a lot more in the tower , but i think they would only allow a visit. Or in the Met office which you learn about the weather. You could still go walk down the line (not airside) and introduce yourself to an operators and see what pilots do
