Vale: Brian Grinter

For those who knew Brian Grinter, he has lost his short battle with cancer.

Passed away a few days ago, funeral possibly today.

Brian's career included ferrying most of the original Partenavias into Australia from Italy back in the 70's, and then mostly corporate jet flying.

Brian flew the Saudi royal family in the Falcon 900 for about 12 years, returned to Australia, flew SAR and mail runs with CYA.

Brian moved to NZ about 5 years ago to fly a Citation out of Ardmore, which he did until his recent medical problems.

An 'old school' gentleman and a source of inspiration.

MF

I'll no doubt catch up with you one day Brian and we'll share a few. You put up with a lot, me included. Rest easy in the meantime.

Roxy: Vale is latin for "farewell", but it is more than that; its use in Latin holds connotations of strength, valour, and honour.

It means "farewell" but it is an honourable farewell.

Is this the same Brian Grinter that is in the Air League?
Yes, among other things.

Thanks Horatio,

very eloquently explained, as you say, it's "farewell, with honour".

Roxy, sorry that your teachers and parents didn't round out your education,

but many Latin terms are still in use today, some in flying e.g. "ab initio" (from the beginning), some in medicine, and many in legales.

Whether or not they are relevant today is subject to opinion and circumstance.

The English language owes a lot to its Latin roots and some knowledge of Latin often helps with understanding unfamiliar words.

Frank, I dont think this Brian is the well known Air League Brian,
a few have asked that question already and I think Brian's postings in aviation would have kept well away from NSW.

Mainframe;

Thanks for that. I had lost touch with Brian G who was involved in the Air League. I hope he is well. The sentiment remains.

Mainframe, just a slight correction.....English language roots are actually not from Latin but rather from what is now northern Germany (Anglo Saxon) and Scandinavia. The Latin influence came later along with many others including much from French which also derived from Latin.

I noted that too Bozzo.

Pity that a farewell post be used for a swipe at someone's education.

Bozzo, The English language has many roots, as you correctly point out. I was referring to those roots of Latin origin.

I did not imply that English is derived solely from Latin.
There are certainly Germanic roots, Spanish roots and definitely French roots

The early colonisation of England involved many cultures,
the Romans had started to colonise England in about 50 BC and remained until about 500 AD.

There is a possibility that some 500 years of Roman colonisation may have flavoured the language.

The Angles and Saxons moved in after the Romans packed up.

Regardless, I was a little surprised that a farewell post had a perplexing question regarding "Vale".

To Roxy, I did not intend a "slur" on your education but felt your post could have been answered by your own research.

I apologise if you took offence

Mainframe, fair enough. I thought twice about making my reply as this post is probably not the place for such comments.

i did know Brian and attended a CRM course with him last year. Sad news indeed.

Hello all,

I was recently alerted to this thread, my name is also Brian Grinter - the one alluded to as "Air League" Brian.

I know its now a few months on, but I felt I should pop on to say a few words.

Back in 1995 I received an email out of the blue from a woman who claimed to know me - I'd made a post on Usenet about flying (I'd recently achieved PPL) and she'd seen it. After a few confusing exchanges I discovered there was another Brian Grinter, also an Australian, also a pilot (although CPL). She had assumed I was him - how many Australian pilots could there be named Brian Grinter? Apparently two...

She had lost touch with him and I thought no more for a few years until I managed to get in contact with him. To be honest, I can't even remember how I bumped into him now but we exchanged a few emails and photos of our respective families. I've just tried to find those now and I was gutted to discover I can't find them.

I do recall that we spoke about our similar backgrounds, although he was older than me. We both had farming backgrounds in the family, I believe his were through Sth Australia. He spoke of some of the flying he did, he mentioned he was flying the Royal Family of the UAE(?) at the time and spoke of having been Alan Bond's pilot in the heady 80s (actually it could have been the woman I'd spoken to in 95). I told him of my love of aviation, joy at having achieved my PPL and work in the Air League to promote aviation to young people.

We had discussed meeting up some time - I think he was in Paris at the time however sadly our paths never crossed and I lost touch with him as I only had an email address. I was saddened to read of his passing, now we will never get the chance to meet face to face.

To "Cynical Pilot" and Frank, rest assured I'm still here.I'm not sure how I would know you although after 3 decades in the Australian Air League as a volunteer I've met many many young boys and girls who went onto interesting lives, in aviation or other worthwhile pursuits. Feel free to drop me an email via bgrinter @gmail.com if you wish.

Mainframe - I'm honoured ( I think ) to be called well known, outside the AAL I really haven't had much to do with aviation although my roles in there have been many and varied over the years.

Regards,
Brian
