Question Aptitude & Interview coaching

I've finally recieved a call from an airline and I'm in a scramble now to prepare before interview time. Which course would people recommend, it's down to PATS or pinstripe I think.
Cheers.

Was it really worth venting your spleen by typing that out 160kts?

To the OP, unfortunately, I think you might not have the luxury to pick and choose who you do the preparation through having left it this late. If you can go through PATS then go with them, I found them to be pretty good.

Cheers

Outbound090, it's never too late mate to prepare for an interview. I am sure you will score the job.

If I were you I would go with PATS. They offer money back if you don't pass the aptitude test. They seem more aviation specific as well.

Good luck mate.

Thumbs up

Outbound

One of the characteristics I have noticed amongst all of my friends who are RPT/Jet drivers is that they are all positive people who will encourage you and cheer you on.

They will do what they can to help and don't criticise or speak negatively about other people.

I suggest you think about the guys you know who ARE in the airlines and think about the common character traits amongst them. Try to enhance those traits in yourself (withou faking it). Smile. Don't be negative. Don't criticise, whinge, bitch or make excuses.

... and don't be like 160 knots

Try to get into a Sim, even the "toy" 737 sims at Darling Harbour and (?) Surfer's Paradice are beneficial (mate of mine used it before he got into Qlink and swears by it).

Good luck

There use to be a guy in WA that went around to major cities and held interview prep courses, if memory serves correct it was Fortress Aviation, dont know if he is still doing them but if you get stuck for Interview Prep look for him in the Yellow/White Pages in WA and he may be able to do prep over the phone. Good Luck with the interview

Which Airline is it for mate?

Don't stress, I found a lot of good stuff on airline interview prep on the net and I love the book handling the big jets. It's a lot cheaper on amazon than through the aviation shops in AU!

Roxychick - if you want to go in unprepared thats fine. For a lot of people this may be the job they have wanted since they were just young kids. Remember the 5 P's - Proper Prior Preparation Prevents Pi$$ Poor Performance.

That being said you can go overprepared. Recruiters these days expect that candidates have spent a fair amount of time preparing for an interview.

I entirely disagree with the fact that you can't prepare for a behavioural or if you do you intend on lieing! Its' is quite laughable that you would say something along those lines.
The point of a behavioural interview is to give the employer a chance to see how you have acted in certain situations in the past as they are good indicators of how you will act in the future. If you think back into your past you can put together some appropriate situations to use for your interview. Everyone can think of situations in hindsight where they didn't do the right thing. If you learnt from it and have created defences to prevent it happening again then its a brilliant situation to put forward.

My point is by spending time practicing answering practice interview questions and the interview process as a whole you are more likely to put your best foot forward on the day.

One final point if someone has been given an interview and wants to spend the 8 weeks prior preparing for it - good on them. I'd much prefer to see someone who spent the time to prepare get the job than someone who went in cold turkey!

Roxychick when the question what have you done to prepare for this interview is asked will you lie to that? I'd love to hear your answer.

Eternity - I reckon your on the right path. You can't go past pinstripe.

Swift, that's 7 P's Numerical critical reasoning is covered in the aptitude test.

Seriously, there have been some good responses in this thread. Those of you who have nothing better to do than criticise, or come up with some hair-brained conspiracy theory about the writer's motivation every time somebody asks for advice have had your posts removed.

Outbound, There are a couple of posters here that I gather are involved in recruiting for the airlines. Search, and ye shall find.

Sorry empacher but reading comprehension has nothing to do with not meaning what you say!

It would be like saying I went on a week holiday for 5 days to Fiji

I think swift was looking for prior planning prevents poor performance

Love ya work J3

I used 'Flight deck consulting' for interview prep. Went for four interviews and got all four jobs. I did 2 sessions and it helped me build confidence with answereing any questions that were thrown at me. I highly recommend them and have told alot of my mates about them who were also very impressed.
My advice is if you really want this job, then do what it takes and spend money on every bit of help you can get.

Outbound and ROO,

These are my tips.

1. Try and speak to people that have been thru the process recently (mates pprune ect). Take notes. Find out as much as you can about the questions and process. Try and simplify all the info have it all in one format/font keep it simple and don't over do it. Try and get the specific questions.

2. Learn about the company - Read the latest press releases how many aircraft ect. (Confidence building)

3. Know Terminal. (Confidence building)

4. Know some very basic high speed aerodynamics (1 or 2 pages dot points).(Confidence building)

5. Buy yourself the best possible suit tie shoes belt and cv/portfolio holder. You will use it again its worth the effort. Give each person on the interview panel a copy of your cv. (Nuts and Bolts this is what its all about)

6. Try and get your hands on the Microsoft flight sim equivalent type they will be testing on. Practice, practice until you vomit. A few days before the interview you want to be doing a practice run in the real thing. Full motion the whole show. Yes this is expensive but missing out is even more expensive I promise. (Nuts and Bolts this is what its all about)

7. Get down/up there a few days before just to settle in. Don't try the night before effort. Make sure you get sleep/food/water. Do what it takes don't skimp.

8. THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE. Get to know yourself go thru your logbook and make some notes about some of the things that have happened to you during your career. Make some dot points on each story and make sure you answer it in the format they want it in (generally STAR). This is the important bit. Go for a walk with your girl/guy/mum/friend whoever after dinner every night and get them to ask you the questions that you obtained back in point 1. You will be surprised how badly you answer this basic stuff about yourself initially. Don't lose heart just keep practicing being concise cutting out the extra stuff. Do it over and over.(Nuts and Bolts this is what its all about)

Getting the job you want is Preparation Presentation and Gift of the Gab. If you can get two of those three you will get past the interview. The sim will be learning the numbers, the calls and the pattern. You should be able to do it in your sleep.

As others say be positive back yourself and say to yourself "this is going to work I'm going to bloody make it work".

The people on these panels/sims are 99% really friendly and nice people they want to see you get thru it makes thier job easy when Outbound/ROO rocks up polished, sharp and confident. Firm handshake and look all of them in the eye. People sometimes think they can just "rock up" or its a whatever. No no - make it happen.

Good luck.

As for courses - personally I don't think you need them. But I might have a bit more experience on my side which makes them less relevant for me than for others.

No problem at all guys/gals.

Make it happen. Don't leave stones unturned but don't over do it and start freaking out. Most of the tech questions are very basic ones (Australian Domestic Airlines) so no point trying to re invent the wheel on the ATPL study. When you answer them keep it bloody short. The less you say the better! If you start going in depth they might start digging and you bloddy don't want that! One of my interviewers gave me a knowing smile as he asked for a bit more info. Priceless moment.

Really the interview is all about being able to answer 4/5 tell us about a time questions in a concise manner. The standard first questions will always be

1. Tell us about your career to date (be concise)

2. Why do you want to fly for us?

3. Why do you want to leave your employer? (this is where you praise your employer but outline that your dream is to fly for ...).

I know for a fact (horses mouth) that the "majors" are just ramping right up and there are alot of opportunities RIGHT NOW! The boom is back get on board. Enjoy.
