Flight planning help - Brisbane area

Hi all,

Looking for some advice on the best route to plan from Caloundra south in an IFR single (Melbourne being final destination). Is via BN practical or is there a more preferred route that avoids Amberly and Oakey at key times (will be flying weekday - day).

You're probably best to avoid bn, as you may get dicked around trying to get a clearance over the top (being so close on departure) due arriving and departing traffic and there is no real advantage tracking that way anyway, unless you are wanting to go coastal. Might be best to track via Kilcoy, Oakey then Moree or something like that, as it will bypass bn and get you inland of the range. It's a reasonably straight line down to Melbs then, with heaps of places to stop on the way for fuel. There should be no issue getting a clearance through Oakey.

We (flight training students out of YBAF) fly through Amberley and Oakey all the time. No problem.

We do YCAB-BN or YCAB - LAV or AMB, just helps if you can be at or above 7000' by Deception Bay , so maybe from YCDR you can do that!

If going west you can go MLY-AMB and on from there.

It would often be the case where you get offered a longer leg DCT, and dont be afraid to ask.

Be good if some BN APP guys could comment on what they prefer people to use, especially where a route is not from the airport you are departing from.

The other common method is Hornibrook Viaduct - Brisbane Control Tower- Manly Boat Harbour @ 1500. A nice view of Brisbane airport if >7000ft or Moreton Island are not for you.

Other option is to track to the TV Towers, call Archerfield approach for an overfly clearance at 1500.

The controllers have always been helpful in both cases.

If it were moi - I would plan Caloundra-Oakey-Goondiwindi-Moree and on down from there on an IFR plan!

1) That is close to the most direct route Caloundra-Melbourne
2) It keeps you out of Brisbane's way (not that that is a great problem anyway IMHO)
3) Transiting Oakey is a non-event!
3) It keeps you away from most of the tiger country to the east of that route

Righto....

Basic flight planning 101. (Not specifically directed at UTR)

If you are going to track via any control zones, you will need to consult the Flight Planning Requirements section of ERSA (FPR - Just after the encode/decode locations section.)

It is ordered by state, then by location alphabetically.
The intro to this section states ALL FLIGHTS are to be planned via these routes if entering controlled airspace.

As Jaba and Ando have said, the requirement for Brisbane transits are either the viaduct route at 1500' or at or above 7000'.

As for the actual route to Melb, preferrably stick in the Class E areas, keeping the protection of radar. It was put in place all down the east coast for this reason.

PS The victor 1 route past Syd heads at <1000 makes a good diversion.

Sounds like the go to me! I can do it too! But some may need a fuel stop, how about Dubbo?

Have found in the interior ATC are more than happy to offer DCT, also west of the great divide the wx is generally better and less of teh "range" to fly over

I was assuming UTR was going IFR, as he mentioned he was flying an IFR single. Therefore tracking over the bn control tower @ 1500' isn't going to be much good to him. Also, overflying bn won't be much good anyway as caloundra is pretty much on the bn-mc track which is a one way route for North-bound traffic out of bn, so the clearance prob won't be available anyway.

I was also assuming he was ferrying an aircraft and not in for the scenic route. Why waste all that time and fuel going the long way round a short cut just to stay in class E. Like jabba said, the wx is generally much better on the other side of the range and it is much flatter too

Hmmm, I should have put my glasses on - missed the whole IFR single bit...

You shouldn't have too many problems flying IFR over BN - we do it all of the time. As MIHC said, check out the FPR and expect a few radar vectors - should be all good.

Hiya UTR. Any reason why you want to avoid military airspace? If it's just because you think you'll be denied due traffic - highly unlikely. Make a quick call to the AMB ATCOs (ph number in ERSA) on the day of, or late arvo before, your flight and they can have a look at the flying program. Only thing that might exclude a transit is the pigs wanting exclusive use of the CTR for display practices etc... not likely at the moment

Friendly chaps there might even give you a PILS on the way through if you ask nicely

Seriously, much better to transit AMB than BN (where there's always traffic).

As Maverick correctly guessed, it's a ferry so time and fuel minimisation is the plan.

Will plan via Oakey then south - thanks to RAAFASA for the tip on ringing in advance. Desire to stay away from MIL airspace I think comes from an ingrained sense of staying away from the red bits on the maps, I still feel like I'm doing something 'wrong' when transiting East Sale.

Lol. The trick is to ignore the grumpy tone some mil ATCOs use - it's probably not meant for you (just habit from dealing with "Top Guns" all day long!) Enjoy the flight.
