CASA ramp check sweep in the NT

Well, its that time of year again.

Just heard from a mate that CASA are tooling around in their PC12 doing a ramp check tour of the NT & NW WA. Time to pull out the flight bag and double check everything is up to date. Oh what fun...

I made the comment some time ago to some CASA guys, implying that from my personal experience up north a few years back, everyone knew they were coming and would suddenly make everything shipshape.

They laughed and said that news of their arrival did not stop people doing some quite obvious illegal stuff, like not endorsed on type etc....

Civil Aviation Safety Authority - June 2009

Keeping north Australian skies safe
A safety sweep by CASA across northern Australia is underway. A team of CASA inspectors, safety advisers, safety education specialists and drug and alcohol testers is travelling across the top of the nation from east to west. Flying in a PC12 aircraft the team will visit regional and remote locations over several weeks. The surveillance sweep will mainly focus on airlines and commercial general aviation operations. CASA’s Director of Aviation Safety, John McCormick, says the exercise is not a one-off and one of the aims will be to gather information on the best location for a CASA work-base in the north-west of Western Australia. Mr McCormick says there is a lot of aviation activity in places such as Broome, Karratha and Kununurra and CASA needs a greater presence to better oversight safety. He says: “The work-base will be manned initially by people from our existing offices in Cairns, Townsville and Darwin. We will man it for a minimum of two weeks of a month.”

The main goal of the northern Australian safety sweep is to offer air operators, pilots and maintainers end-to-end safety guidance. This will be achieved by CASA’s inspectors working with safety advisers and education specialists to inform and advise people in the aviation industry on their safety obligations. CASA’s team will be able to offer practical safety help by answering questions and providing training and education materials. Naturally, if breaches of the aviation legislation or regulations are found then appropriate action will be taken, however, the aim will be to promote education as a primary safety tool.

Hassell - do you know the call sign?

I'll be listening out and watching that they are practicing what they preach.

Might be time to learn some obscure Jepp data...

Yeah ... RIGHT
Having spoken and chatted to the safety advisors recently, they make it quite clear that they are not auditors and their purpose is education and constructive assistance. Discussions remain in confidence from the auditors.

From the day they spent with us, I believe this approach.

There is a new CASA afoot. Give them a chance.

Good thing he's ex Casa or I'd be expecting a PC12 wheels up at an airstrip near you
