Dining on Overnights
Time to share the best places to dine on overnights in the great land of Oz. Successful venues must be excellent quality, reasonably priced and there must be more than two items on the plate. Over to you.
Rockhampton would have to be the most expensive place in QLD. I admit our budget on o/nights runs only to pub meals, but prices in Rocky are maybe 50% higher than equivalent establishments elsewhere.
Best in Rocky: Criterion hotel or Heritage hotel
Best in Gladstone: Grand Hotel or Yacht Club
Best in Roma: KFC
Cooktown: The resort

When in Melbourne, try the steak at the Balaclava Hotel in Carlisle Street. The pub/pokie atmosphere belies the quality of the kitchen, the $25-odd eye fillet is one of the juiciest and best-tasting steaks I've had, and beats fare that other restaurants charge double for hands down. You might run into some interesting St Kilda type characters in the bar, and it generally makes for a colourful and interesting evening
The only better steaks I've had in Australia have been at the Steakhouse at New Quai, Docklands, they're pricey but will cut your bill in half on a Tuesday which makes it excellent value, and the quality of the food is outstanding, that is world class kind of outstanding.
In Brisbane, there's Cha Cha Char, the Wagyu is out of this world (they've collected the Best Steak Award several times), and I haven't even tried the top of the range steak which will probably make a grown man weep it's very pricey though and their excellent wine list can blow out the damage exponentially, but worth a once-off for a celebration, or for the Check and Training captains reading this, because you're worth it

Best in Roma: KFC
Best in Roma: The Club Hotel; BC's Bar & Grill; The Explorers; McGann's Irish Pub; The Golden Dragon. All prices better than city prices.
No 1 son takes his own packet noodles and pockets the overnight allowance!
Torres
I have spent 1 night in Roma, and the final choice of cuisine was forced upon me.
Having waited for over an hour and a half for our meals at the faux Irish pub (and watching everyone else get served, while the waitress resolutely refused to make eye contact) we moved on to the only remaining dining facillity in town.
My 7' tall co-pilot took the double bed in the onsite cabin we were sharing; there were no blankets available in said cabin; Co-pilot thought he was dying at 2 am and (very noisily) thumped around, got a cab and went to the hospital.
My one night in Roma was, old friend, the worst overnight I have ever had - the KFC was the high point - and no, I am not in a hurry to return!

I get Maccas and save the $130 odd dollar over night allowance
Which can then pay for your recovery from the heart attack in 10 years!!

They've gone and the place is vastly improved.
The Golden Dragon is east one block and the Club Motel east two blocks. Both excellent.
