Hangar for a C172 Sydney/surrounds
I am getting my own aircraft after much frustration hiring others.
Looking for a hangar-any ideas on where and costs?
Preferred Sydney BK or to the North before Newcastle.

I'm not sure but I think Warnervale and Belmont are both options at the moment.

Go to Bankstown or Camden......if you don't mind your aircraft being stuffed in the back of a hangar, having to move half a dozen much heavier ones before you can even see it. let alone move it, nasty hangar rash appearing as if by magic, (no-one ever does it), suddenly finding it left out in all weathers because it got in someone's way, then paying $3-400/month in rent and over $30 to the corporate airport owners and ASA for every movement.
You could join this lot:

Hey Cleared,
I had a look at the web site, it seems I would still be up for $3600 if I include their fees for 2 units, insurance, runway fees a year plus a $3300 joining fee. That's $6900 for the first year. Hmm. Am I looking at it incorrectly?

So what can I expect to pay for outside parking at a rural strip? No movement charges is a major plus, just looked at BK..
Maybe somewhere I could put a temp tarp/roof up? Don't like the idea of hailstones...

No you are not looking at it correctly Sprocket. It's a once of $3,300 joining fee, an annual membersip of $482(which reduces to $212 if you contribute 3 days of your labour) and an insurance levy of $82 plus key deposits. The rest is for hangar owners and the going rate at the moment is around $20/week for hangar rent. So you are looking at approx $3,300 + $212 + $82 + $50 + say $20/week for rent = $4,684 for the first year then about $1,400/year there after.
The fees are a little confusing, but hopefully we can make it a bit clearer. We all work on a voluntary basis to make it the best flying club in Australia.

We have a first class runway now at YWBN and the club always welcomes fellow aviators. Anyone is welcome to fly in at any stage to check us out.
I'm not sure whats available north of Sydney, but Warnervale is on shakky ground and the only place that I can think of is Cessnock. There is a small strip at Somersby, but you will have trouble getting out of there in a C172.

Just had a look at Somersby on Google, what's the deal? 700m difficult for a C172? Surely not. I just did a country trip in a 172 and the longest strip was 740m. Just looking at the POH and TO to 50ft at 1000ft PA and 40c is 2015ft, or 614 metres at MTOW. Is there something special about it that makes it difficult?
But you are right, it is darn difficult to find anywhere to the north. The entire WVA complex is off to Belmont soon.
My only issue with Wedderburn is it's further from my house than Cessnock or Warnervale. Now if I lived in Campbelltown...

I don't think hangarage is a huge ripoff. Property is a huge ripoff in this country, thanks to our capital cities and their property booms, greedy developers, governments and baby boomers (generalisation, I know). For a country that has the population density like ours even if you take away the desert, it's blown out of all proportions. No wonder there aren't any airfields left.

For the cost of 3-4 months hangar rent you could get yourself a very impressive custom built aircraft cover and then you could leave it at your closest field and not be concerned about it.

Funny you guys should mention Somersby. I was in Sydney last week and came very close to buying that airport. Unfortunately someone beat me to it. Although it caters primarily to sport aircraft, I did see a picture of a PC-12 landing there.
The airport has 8 hangers, 7 of which are leased. With a change of ownership it may be worth looking into.

SC. What Google doesn't show is the slope. Winds would have to be favorable to take off from there with a fully laden C172, plus there are plenty of trees around. Always check with local pilots what conditions are like to take off from marginal strips. The POH is not the be all and end all, allthough its a good start. Plenty of people have died trying to take off from strips that according to their POH was long enough. A few years ago 4 people died at YWBN when they tried to take off in a C172 and it has a 1000m strip. Funny how those trees at the end tend to scare people. They don't need to be cleared by a huge amount, a few feet will do! Use the ground effect to your advantage and know what your best angle of climb speed is.

I couldn't work out the point of having a strip in the middle of nowhere but one of the aircraft owners pointed out:
1 It is within 45 minutes drive of Chatswood, and
2 There are 500,000 North Shore refugees living in the Gosford area right on its doorstop.
I wonder if there is an opportunity for a RAAus school there? Good business opportunity being so close to Syd.
Every aircraft I have known with external covers has external window scratches. One in particular required $6,000 worth of new windscreen... ouch

One day arrive and find it has hail damage or upended from a severe storm, stinking interior and water in the fuel tanks from heavy rain, eventual expensive avionics issues from moisture entering the cabin and finally the greater potential for internal airframe corrosion, particularly during periods of high humidity.
Nothing like being able to comfortably sleep when you know that your pride & joy is hangared and protected when severe storms are about.

For your information, Somersby has indeed been sold and this is the PPRUNE YSMB contact.
There are plans for a re-vitalisation of the airfield, it has been a little neglected, the runway surface is actually a compacted and hardened sand loam with sandstone base.
There is also a perfectly good grass strip directly alongside the main runway which is only 50m shorter.
Approach and departure is preferred to the North as we have a slope of 2% down to the North.
Sprocket will be moving in soon and there is still a hangar space or two left (a lot cheaper than the grass at BK). Warnervale is definitely moving soon to Belmont (Aeropelican) so this will be the only strip between BK and Newcastle and only 30mins from Wahroonga.
It will be listed in ERSA FAC from November. There are some local hazards so please call if you are coming to visit, all welcome. Very soon there will be transport (hire car) available if you want to come and go in to Gosford or Sydney as well as a number of other services, such as aircraft hire and other goodies.

Awesome vid YSMB. Bet those PC12 pilots were glad they got off the deck!
Somersby is a great little airfield which is positioned really nicely- used it very nicely for some PFL's/PSL's during my PPL training as it was a convenient diversion going north or coming back south to Bankstown.
