Jet X, a breath of fresh air!

For too long (not that long really, but long enough) have we had to hear the eternal whine of the professional's. There are many of your contemporaries that I have to listen to at an over wing red tailed carrier, about not being to get a command, whilst they are still are behind the ears.

Enjoy your time, and enjoy the view, at least you will have something interesting to talk about on overnights.

And please don't let the dark side of the force get you.

60s. I remember the AN DHC4 in PNG
That photo brings back memories from long ago.

As an Apprentice with Ansett in Melbourne in the 1960s, I went up to PNG to help service that Aircraft when it had a major check, very interesting trip.

To the moderators...

If you want to take a step to help resurrect this site from a b!tch and whinge site to one that is of value to pilots PLEASE make this post a sticky.

JetX thanks for taking the time to say so well what has needed to be said for a long time.

To those who disagree with JetX perhaps you should start posting on bitter&twistedpilots.com instead

Great first post Cannon71!!

Pleasant change from the majority of first posts - which is why the first five posts from new users are subject to Moderator approval if they contain certain words or a URL link.

Yes, I would go back to flying into Diamond Gorge in a 210 anyday if the wife and toe rags would come along. Barra fishing was just as incredible as the flying. Some days I sat there at 8500/9500 feet thinking I was the luckiest guy in the world. And the words, "hey Pilot you got room this arvo" ring loud in my head, great bunch of natives in the Kimberly.
I remember sitting in the Fitzroy River with a bunch pickled out of my tree on days off, ( only took 3 Beers it was that hot ), when a local grabbed a catfish off the coals and hooked in like I would a souvlaki on a big night.

And a very good native friend took me to some part of the river where we stopped the 4wd and walked for 20mins. Man I have never had so much fun fishing as I did that day. I tried to take a friend of mine there once and got dismally lost, that is until I flew back along the river and mapped it out.

Wise words cannon, Go into GA for some fun and experience, forget the hours. Just look after yourself, don't work for dodgy operators and cherish the moment.

Great thread jetX

I spent 10 years in GA and had a ball...wouldn't hand that back for anything....LOVED every minute.

sixtiesrelic wouldn't it be great to find out who that kid is/was...what did he see/do in the world war that was upon them as that pic was taken?

Surely his name appears in your uncles logbooks?

Nice post. Still young, only ten years in but i share your views. Common conversation " is that you done for the day" "yeah" "but you only changed a seat" "they dont pay me enough" "you get 90g a year" "a pittance" "go back to ga, learn what is is not to be paid enough and actually have to show reason for why it took 0.2 of an hour to change a seat" I loved ga, everyone worked, no competition from your mates cause they were getting flogged just as hard as you, giving it there all. Do that now and its all too hard, its too hot, thats someone elses job, dont we pay someone to clean up after us..... ect ect

Unfortunately there are still some people who wouldn't be happy if they were put straight into the RHS of a 777 on $145k pa.
Can earn more than that managing a fast food store. Yawn, you must be a bean counter at V Australia

No Chuckles. The logbooks were different then and he didn't mention any one else in the aircraft till he went to Adelaide and was made a F.O. in Lockheeds. He was a bit dirty about this, as he had more time with Guinea Airways in N.G than almost all the blokes had in Adelaide, that he was flying with and he had more more hours in large trimotor aircraft.
His early logboks are in Holland unfortunately, but here's an early Adealide page to show the layout. This was his third forced landing. Two in N.G. where he was lucky to walk away.
Hurried away from the second one in Kuku kuku country back to Surprise creek before someone made a meal of him.

Jetex,

Great post.
I strongly highlight the take photos bit. I really regret not getting a shot of the machine I did my first solo in.

Take photos. Stay positive.

Great post Jetx! Thanks for reminding me of why I got into aviation in the first place

sixtiesrelic - thanks for your posts - during the sixties I lived as a kid in NG. I'd like to think I might have been one of your passengers

For any one that forgets the romance of aviation I suggest you read the life of Duke Elegant. You can find the thread here :

The Big Chill -Tales of an old aviator -Duke Elegant

Its a long thread but well worth the read.

A well written post for sure from a youngster too but what's written isn't anything new. Life is what YOU make it, aviation is just one very small part of life for very few. The bitching here on PPRUNE & there is a LOT of it shows that humans are not perfect. We live in a very different world today than those days when round engines had pistons. You simpy can't compare those days/times to today, dog eat dog now. Still a must read for the newbies anyway.
