How many do you wear??? 2 for instructor or commercial? What are 3 and what are four??? I think you hear a lot of interpretation depending on where you are? But what’s the deal???

Presently (when on tour) none.

And for part 2... generally (in GA land)

2 bars - Gr 2/3 instructor or general SE charter
3 bars - Gr1 instructor or bigger charter capt (eg RFDS etc)
4 bars - CFI/CP

I remember a ferry captain on a b200 that arrived at our hangar in CNS saying in a loud texan drawl, "How come you pilots all wear three bars - you're all captains after all??".

You wear however many your company gives you and tells you to wear.

None. In my opinion it's all a bit of a . However some people have no choice as their companies require pilots to wear them. There is a discussion here.

FOUR!!!!! and I blind everyone on the ramp when I swagger past Then I strap myself to my 172S no less and terrorise the training area with my white silk scarf out the window and slapping the fuselage.

It doesn't matter how many you're wearing, as long as you take them off when you go down to the greasy spoon/coffee place for lunch and to/from work

You ought to know better than that Wiz! Back in Port Morbid, if you wore your epaulettes when walking into the Club Dero bar you were fined!!
The fine was 'shout the bar!!'

No-one was ever caught as far as I know but Tinpis may have heard of someone from way back when....!

It doesn't matter how many you're wearing, as long as you take them off when you go ...to/from work.
So stopping to get petrol and having them on makes you an idiot?

Sometimes I think we're way too precious about the uniform...and that means both ways. Some are precious because they're wearing it all the time. Others are precious because they go to inordinate and futile lengths to not be seen wearing any paraphernalia related to aviation. Personally I've just never invested that much energy as to give a stuff either way. Today's the exception I guess.
