Rex Cadet School YMNG

Rex Cadet School YMNG
An aquaintance of mine is considering applying for a position with the Rex mob at Mangalore. No real desire to go to airlines but looking for a stable career in GA. he's got a few thousands of hrs, grade 1 and all the trimmings.
Is the school set to be around for a while or will they disbandon it as quickly as it was started when the cadets are all in the RHS. Surely the cant be pumping cadets ad infinitum?
If so, would the instructor staff be placed into the airline, what is the general progression into the airline for the instructors. is there any?

It's all kept pretty well seperate from the airline, at least untill the Cadets graduate. Can't have them being "infected" with dissent, can we?
As far as I know there are now 5 instructors that are currently on the REX seniority list. Just what the tenure is before one is incorporated into the airline, I'm not sure, but I have heard it's 5 years!!!
The original 3 instructors are now senior enough for command on the SAAB, having never flown the aircraft! So if you're "aquaintance" is keen on a career in instructing, then after 5 years he/she may just have the option to move on if he/she would like a change of pace.
As for the 40+ Cadets under training, if REX keep reducing the schedule due the shortage of Captains, some may just find themselves surplus to requirements!
Funny ol' world isn't it?

Where would Rex put the training AC at Wagga? last time i was there the place is chocka 'cept for the RAAF side of course.
Not a lot of room to build either, other people have been buying up all the surrounding land for their own agendas.

I have heard that the RAAF have some spare space. Apron, buildings, hangars etc... Rumour has it they are negotiating with REX for their use. Rumour only of course, should become apparent soon.

While we are on the mangalore subject,
Does anyone know what avionics suite they are running on the seminole down there???? I heard they might be a glass job ala G1000 or is it just a normal panel with a G430 or so. Just curious.
Moving from mangalore to wagga at this stage in the game seems rediculous. Why would a company after investing in infrastructure for a flying college up and move it after only 12 months in there. Mangalore seems like a much better spot for training when you consider the aerodrome itself, RPT density (Mangalore nil??) and YMNG's proximity to Mel and Essondon for ILS training. There must be more to this.
Thanks

latest from the hallowed halls of the REX C&T department.
The first batch of cadets to finish their endorsement are now commencing line training, with a twist. Whilst flying they (cadets) are required to have a "Safety Pilot" in the Jump seat! Does anyone know, is this "world's best practice", or are there some nevous nellies worried about the end product of Jim's little adventure.
And please! What the hell is a line F/O in the jump seat going to do that the properly certified Trainer in the left seat can't?
They have been sucessfully endorsed, right?

VB Newbies are assigned jumpseat saftey pilots for the first few days. At first the new hire sits in the jump to get a feel for the normal operation without the multitutude of failures experienced in the sim. The Captain will involve the jumpseater in a variety of ways. When the newbie moves to the RHS the more experienced FO assists in the flow of the operation providing resources such as scan and flow assistance so the captain can operate more efficiently.
Having said that one would think the level of experience in the rhs is limited anyway so the captain will probably be looking out for both of them

Moving the Rex Flight School makes a lot of sense.
It would move/moves the aircraft maintenance to the Rex Wagga base where the aircraft could/will be based. No need to fly them south from MNG to MB as is the case at present with all the attendent staff movement problems.
Then there is the case for basing the school at a bigger-city airport thus allowing the instructors to enjoy a real life in a real city and not having to drive back and forth to the likes of Melbourne or wherever. Outsiders have long commented on the lack of a lifestyle that instructors have working at Mangalore. This has been one reason that Rex has had problems with getting the right instructors.
The weather may also be better at Wagga than Mangalore. Wagga is situated within easy striking distance of the nav aids and CTA at Albury, Canberra, Melbourne, Mangalore and even Sydney.
The move to Wagga could also see an improvement in the radio work and CTAF(R) work of the flight students, sometimes lacking at present.
Smart move Rex! One has to wonder why the school was not based at Wagga from the start!
