i have almost finished aviation degree at griffith bne while i worked in air astana on f50, ive since flown airbus A320 and learnt a lot of stuff at griffith that i missed in 1980 when i started flying so really the degree is good but do it part time perhaps and fly at the same time,if u have a commercial ( with 2000hrs ) u can do degree with only 12 subjects in 2 years, paul bates is the prof at griffith he is the most helpful guy u have ever meet The prices have gone up but its worth it if u enjoy aviation.
There may be a downturn in jobs soon so maybe the degree could open other doors if pilot jobs are hard to find

Get one other than.....
I was Air Force and never went to college for the famous Bachelor. In Germany we go straight from school. Over the years I regretted that a few times such as Delta, FedEx...... As
I flew corporate for a few years I went and got a medics license. I think its good to have a backup. I just wouldn't get an aviation degree if management is not the goal.

If I hadn't done it I'd be in the left seat as opposed to the right seat today. Australia has a seniority based system.
WHEN you join is everything. Academia, skill, work ethic etc have no relevance.

pilotchute; Whilst I tend to agree with your observation ( WOFTAM) I also admit that some might find it useful as an Educational tool.
IE if the holder of the degree wished to work solely as an Instructor for any period of time.
Whether or not any prospective Employer would prefer anyone with that degree over a 'bog standard' CPL holder is another thing entirely.
From my experience, especially in PNG; All of my Chief Pilots had the same attitude to hiring of new Pilots, which I can summarise as,
I don't give a what his/her educational/extra skills/qualifications are! All I want to know is, can he/she fly!!

i wouldnt call it a WAFTAM, its education for a start, so that a good thing, i am doing the masters level of the aviation degree now, and after being in the industry for more than 25 years, im learning new things. i am not relying on the degree to advance my position in aviation, if it did, bonus, but im not relying on it,(being paid for by my boss helps a lot as well)
what it is to me, is a door opener to other degrees, i might not be in the aviation game for much longer with my other half doing a medical degree, so i need to reskill and educate for a life outside aviation at some point. being possibly stuck in the outback somewhere, maybe a earth sciences or resource related degree after this.
If i was 15 again, when i started flying, i would go down the path of the degree if flying was your 100% goal, Its online and only requires a few hours of study a day, something you can still do while flying. so the degree Vs flying argument isnt really valid.
to be honest, there are quite a few subjects in the degree i feel should be mandatory for both pilots, and maintainers.. if all my staff in the hangar had knowledge of airworthiness principles as i do, i wouldn't have to constantly argue about deviating from the maintenance manuals, and why you just cant do it..
same goes for Airbus control theory, and why it does what it does.. how many newly minted FO's have a clue about the logic behind the airbus control theories? and why they designed them that way?

Education
So do the degree after you get your airline job.
Newbies like to avoid biting the bullet and going west. The longer you put it off the further down the list you will be. It's so much fun sitting next to a guy with no qualifications who is three to five years younger on double the money! I love hearing them preach. Be them not me do the degree later!
