Remote places to fly into and camp
Hi PPRuNer's
I'm looking for recommendations for remote places within half a day's flight of Melbourne (in my trusty 115 knot Piper Archer) that we can fly in to, and where we can camp either right there or at a site nearby.
We basically want to experience the legendary Aussie desert night sky, and just spend a few quiet days away from the big smoke.
If there's no campsite or other infrastructure nearby, that would not necessarily be a problem if camping under the wing is doable and relatively safe.
The wish list includes the ability to have a camp fire (obviously not under the wing, that one ).
Any and all advice is as usual greatly appreciated!

There is a campsite in Croajingalong near the Mallacoota airstrip that we walked to from the aircraft. I cannot remember how far or much about the walk as it was 14 years ago. We were fairly lightweight campers back then doing a lot of bushwalking so that may bias the distance somewhat in the memory.
Lovely campsite near the beach, just watch for the scorpions in the tent.

Would somewhere like this be appropriate?
There's a 600'ish metre strip here suitable for most machines. It's probably 90 miles from Moorabbin if that's where you are and it's within 25 miles of a fairly major airfield if you decide you've had enough of the "desert." Luckily for you, with the current 13 year drought the "desert" as you put it has moved very close to Melbourne so you'll save $$$ on hire costs!
PM me if you want the coordinates.

Fly & Camp
Hey Bender, Two of my favourite fly & camp places are Lizard Island and The Dig Tree; though I suspect Dick Smith has travelled much farther and wider. Lizard is a National park, has camping, and what would be some of the best off the beach snorkeling that I have seen on the East Coast. Dig tree probably best visited during the not-so-hot months but could be included with a trip to Birdsville. Coconut Island in the Torres Strait is a very pretty place with new cabins right on the white sandy beach. Dunk Island also has camping, with sealed strip perhaps a 3 minute walk, right on the beach. Have to recommend Old Station Fly-in at Raglan Qld, Long weekend in June. Understand that they are all a little more than 90 minutes from Melb, but indubitably plan a visit one day. Cheers Lucky
