Red Bull Air race - Qantas Jet flypast

Is it just me, or was the 737 – 800 fly past in Perth a complete waste of time?

I think ‘gay’ was the word used most to describe it later in the pub (a little inappropriate).

C’mon boys, I know its safety first, but seriously……….

Disclaimer – this is not a dig at the pilots, like most I am sure they would have liked something a little more ‘remarkable’.

I expected it to be lower to be honest, given last year the 767 came down to 2000 (by his xpdr at least). I don't think the 738 was any lower.

I think you also get your judgement coloured by watching the F-18. Hard to compete with that in an airliner.

Who else remembers the AAE 727 that came out of nowhere and did a great low, fast pass over the Swan River about....8-10 (?!?) years ago on Australia Day?
It thundered right over the boat. I will remember that one for a long time.

A Cathay 330 put on a good show at Pearce a couple of years back.

Perhaps, but it will never do a turn with burner on or a vertical departure to FL180.

I saw the 330 display at Pearce, that was pretty good, but it was at an airfield, not a river next to tall buildings.

My all time favourite was to Australian Airlines 727 at Avalon 1995. Straight over the crowd at 350kts plus.

Now that's a real jet from the golden age.

Any chance QF may be able to drag those guys up for the next display????

Question

JJW, sure that wasn't '93? I wasn't there in '95 but I was in '93 and I certainly recall a very low, very fast 727 sneaking up on on the crowd from behind.

Ah yes, the cathay '330 at Pearce, that was a good show, followed by QF doing orbits in a 737 at what seemed like 10 grand

The RNZAF 757 is always a pleasure to watch!

There may be a long corporate memory at Qantas after all. Sometime prior to the merger with TN, I am told that a Qantas management chappie was 'demoted' for an alleged low fly-past in a B747 at Oskosh. So it may be a case of once bitten twice shy. Are there any old timers around who can tell us what happened? Teresa??

Hey I was there for that! That was Australia Day 2000.

Maybe it was the 5 hours of sunlight and 5 hours of coolant that made it seem all the more speccy but over 8 years on and I still think of that flypast!

Perhaps QF only did what CASA allowed them to under a dispo to CAR 156.

The Red Bull schedule originally said that a Qantas B747 was going to do the flypast, but it was changed at the last minute. At that altitude, a 747 would have looked more impressive than a 737.

The river is quite wide in front of the city, so the tall buildings are not that close, especially if you fly in a line from over the Causeway to the Narrows Bridge.

I read elsewhere that other airlines were interested in doing flypasts, but were told to pay $10,000 for the opportunity of "free advertising".

It could have been like that Cavalcade of Flight flypast in 2003, where we had a nice variety of types flying over at low level (P-51D Mustang, Citation, Dash 8, Brasilia, Lear 45, RFDS PC-12, Winjeel, DH83 Fox Moth, Tiger Moths, etc). A demo by the AMSA/AeroRescue Dornier 328 and the RAC Rescue Bell 412 would also have been good.

It was great to have the Hornet and Roulettes. However, as the RAAF celebrated the 50th year of service for the C-130 Hercules on the weekend, it would also have been appropriate to have a C-130 display.

Regards,
David

The RNZAF have done some pretty impressive displays in their 727s and more recently in the 757s. Maybe the RAAF should have brought a tanker across for a low level full noise display instead of Qantas
