MEIR Training in Northern NZ

G'day,

I have finally decided to get stuck in and do my instrument rating over the next few months. So, was just wondering if anyone can recommend a good place (or person) to do my MEIR training with.

I'm currently working full time in Northland so would prefer somewhere from Auckland north but am open to suggestions. A high standard of training is the main consideration.....

Any info is appreciated.

Thumbs up You want a high standard:

If you can get him!

Try Warren Sattler at Ardmore, ie: Ardmore flying school.

Eagle Flight Training is good.. out of Ardmore..

Mike Foster is running it last I heard.. A-Cat, has flown the lighties, to the Learjet (still does I hear) and DC-10s..

I found John Gemmell good too. A-Cat as well and current Boeing 73 captain..
Drinks Vailima... (bit wide cut for me...) He usually floats around Eagle Flight Training or Airline Flying Club at Ardmore.

If you can stretch to Hamilton, you might want to have a chat with John Shuttleworth at Waikato Aero Club...

Great guy and from what I have seen[1], an excellent teacher... and as an added bonus you might get a ride in the 3/4 scale Mustang he is putting together!

Not sure what they offer in the way of ME tho... but they have the sim handy...

[1] Disclaimer: I have not started my IR yet... only 'tagged along' for the ride with a colleague working throught it...

Warren wouldn't do your training anymore..he'd farm you out to an eager B-Cat who needs multi hours..then watch your bills pile up

Few notes on people mentioned, from experience

I concur with MattyJ ( ASA Mr Tecnam ) . WS is certainly experienced, however, his schedule, personality and sometimes his femininity and all liabilities to his students. And, also, I have heard him mention, swear ,yell, become sulky when he has been assigned to fly IFR in the twin

MattyJ is 100% correct. There are ambitious eager young boys and girls in almost desperation to produce two engine hours, and their inexperience and immaturity will again cost the student- that’s you
XRNZAF.

One particular gentlemen that would be an asset if you were to fly at Ardmore FS, is, ‘Mr Paul Scruby‘. He is elderly and experienced. Great person and loves teaching, takes great pride in watching his students do well. And pass

Finally, with regards to AFS, I know students that take 6, 9 even 12 months to complete a twin IFR. That is a fact, and only passing it on to the reader. The reasons are, only two duchesses and likely one or the other is often in maintainence, or most commonly, booked out by the large horde of local and international students, and lastly due to the instructors prejudiced and indecision as to which student to pluck from the student bank. Even having the odd twin instructor come in from another job doesn’t assist, oh but they are usually stroking their ego, and are greedy fro more money. which hurts AFS

With regards to Eagle. M Foster is highly experienced and flies all sorts around the field, and he‘s a nice person. I wouldn’t recommend Darryl. Have witnessed many occasion his calls, decisions, methods etc and all were questionable. Not to mention his unenthusiastic attitude. If you pay
XRNZAF, you would only wish for a whole hearted effort, right. Not with D

As for the rest of the names mentioned. Don’t know. Only want to tell you about the ones I have dealt with and seen on many occasion, and therefore would know.
Good luck with the IFR

Yep, good stuff Mr Saucer. I have my own opinions on AFS which I will keep largely to myself. However, rest assured it hasn't made the shortlist. 'nuff said.....

give some thought to doing it with an operator who also does commercial work. getting pumped out of one of those dorkland sausage factories only puts another step in the process of getting a job.

if ya can, do it with a real operator so that when you're done, by default they've had a look at you and thereby you've already had your job interview.

Give Pete Vincent a call, ask him to him if you can hire a 402 and one of his guys to put you thru. maybe be dearer than a sh*&box seneca or part banana/duchess/whatevers that the schools use but you'll come out with a useful rating which you'd prolly have to pay for anyway.

not trying to knock those kids at the flying schools (we all had to start somewhere) but for my money Id rather not spend it with a 22yr old whos got 500hrs in the ardmore circuit and never been south of taupo. it wont wash if you wanna job further south.

cheers
