Ah TML, I guess the wet seasons started up there. Heat must be getting to you.
A spark will only ingite fuel vapour that is in direct contact with the ignition source. A closer inspection of the pic will show the wing severed outboard of the wing tanks, no fuel vapour from a sealed vessel.
When the A/C has come to rest the power lines would have already contacted earth and as any yr 10 physics student can tell you, there needs to be a gap between two differing voltages produce a spark.
I'm not suggesting that fuel wasn't an issue, but why are you trying to hang this guy for something which you do not have all the information. I pray that if there ever comes a day that I have to make a forced landing you're not on the investigation team!!!!!

Captain W you’re a wiz kid!!! Your knowledge of physics is second only to the great AE himself. I’m afraid you took the bait hook line and sinker. Thanks for the strong opinion your CRM is obvious son. P.S. Not hanging the Pilot he did a great job.

That inspection, close as it was, does not give much of an idea what the state of the port wing and its tank is, or are you looking at a different photo??
It was only suggested as a possibility, in view of the lack of any foam which is usually spread if any fuel is leaking or lying about.

Depends MAIDEN. Did you have the fuel selector on Both or left/right. This particular one had the same as a 172. Didn't always suck from both tanks. Hd to keep an eye on the guages constantly when on both. It was easier to switch tanks like the rest of the 210 fleet.
PS. How is Mussolini's revenge!

That was un-called for Omni - your highlighted comment I believe was a tongue in cheek addendum to the SMH article, not something attributable to the pilot involved.
As for the licence he holds, he got his the same way you probably did - through sheer hard work and determination, not mentioning the cost.
