ex Commonwealth airfields
Little research project going on...
Does anyone know some ex Commonwealth airfields which were transferred to local council ownership years ago, and then on-leased to another entity for 99 or so years. example, Bacchus Marsh Victoria.
(exclude Avalon and Essendon - Interested in rural strips.)

Don't know about the 'onleasing' part of your question but just about every major country airport was subject to the ALOP (Airfield Local Ownership Plan, or something similar) in the early 70's.
Mildura, Benalla, Corowa, Wagga Wagga, Dubbo, Parkes etc etc, the list goes on and on were some of the airfields given to the local councils to administer
Coincidently the person orchestrating the Plan for the government had the initials DH, very apt. He may have (hopefully) retired by now, the last I heard of him a few years ago he was orchestrating the "sale/lease/gift" of the Bankstowns, Moorabbins, Sydney KSA and Melbournes to their current paragons of aviation service suppliers.

Thanks Tipsy - somewhat useful clues there.
Bacchus Marsh for example, was transferred over from C'Wealth by deed in late 1992. A year later, airfield was leased (at no cost!) to another entity. So that's about the era I'm interested in, for similar airfields.

When I started flying in 1958 most if not all aerodromes were under the authority of the Dept of Civil Aviation. I think it was in the early 60's that the DCA started to hand them over to the local Councils, most of whom did not want the expense of running them.
The fist indication this had happened was that the area outside the gable markers started to produce cereal crops followed by the disappearance of the groundsman.
Outside the capital cities a sealed runway usually meant that the place had been a RAAF aerodrome that ended up under the control of the DCA.
PM me if you have any specific queries re Vic/ NSW locations. I still have all my WAC charts from that time but unfortunately not AGA
