I wonder if the Lockhart River aircraft pilot was "going for the light spot". He had spoken about it on another occasion.
I personally searched for the light spot for many years, and could never find one.
I also think a strikefinder is a good thing to have on a dark stormy night. They are mysterious, clever things.
I remember one of those rare days when there were broken clouds including Towering CU's and the odd CB. (rare in Alice anyway) On top of this lot I could see where everything was visually and check this against the dtrikefinder and the radar. One this occasion everything agreed.

I think you'll find that was a case of 'shooting the hole'...(which turned out to be a sucker)...I wasn't talking about decending below LSALT in IMC without conducting the approach....clearly suicidal, as demonstrated.
And the originator of this post was asking about getting around in marginal conditions 'without wx radar'. My point was, if you are enroute in the soup, without radar, (or even with, and it subsequently fails), it's prudent to head for the lighter areas as opposed to the darker, although, with 'freq cb' forecaste, i'd most likely admire the light show from the ground, but who here has never been caught out before?
