That was the Montford Catholic Mission (Kiunga) C180. I can't remember the details now but if I am correct the Catholic Priest was flying it and was killed.

Chimbu Warrior will have all the detail.

P2 - UIA

I currently own this aircraft VH - UIA. She is greatly loved and we undertake many trips together. She cruises at 136kts yesterday we had a gs of 175 kts.
She has 1750 hours Total time.
I guess what I was asking did anyone know of her or maybe even flew her,she was based in Wewak.

UIA

Any pictures of UIA ?

This is a picture of the MAF base in Wewak in the early 70's, with MFU wearing the original colour scheme when first registered VH. The 185's first operational flight in PNG was 21 Feb 1972. One of it's original pilot's noted:-

"I remember that as I flew c180 and C185's a lot, I found it (MFU) great as it was so "tight" with no squeaks and wobbles. However after it had done a number of flights into Tekin it soon 'loosened"up!!! Tekin in those days was short, had a muddy dip in the centre and was very hard on a/c".

And the pilot's no doubt !

Could anyone tell me if they knew of a Cessna 180 P2 - UIA ?
She met up with an accident at Tarakbits.
I believe this was the accident that killed Father Bouchard, a French-Canadian priest who spent many years flying around the western province.

Here is a little light reading that I put together years ago, with the help of austairdata. Covers most change of owners up till 2006.

UIA

I currently own VH - UIA she is a great aircraft. Cruises at 136 Kts.
TT 1700 hrs. Last year I gave her a new motor and autopilot.
She is a tight aircraft and flies well.
I was interested to hear from anyone who may have flown or knew her.

UIA

I have just looked up P2 - UIA last maintenance release.
The pilot in command when the accident was Bill Farrell he was uninjured in the accident. Father Bouchard had flown the aircraft within the last 12 months on several occasions. The accident occurred on 31/12/84 at Tarakbits.

P2-EIE

Copied skywagon185's link:-

"When DCA grounded the Ansons in 1962, Alan Rae, founder of Flinders Island Airlines, replaced them with Skywagons. Seen above is the first VH-FIE at Moorabbin in May 1963. Sold off by the airline in 1966, it became VH-EIE, thus leaving its rego open for the Beech. VH-FIE later went to New Guinea and was damaged in a crash at Balimo in 1972. When restored, it went onto the PNG register as P2-EIE. It began life on the US register as N4193Y".

P2-UIA

Re accident 31DEC1984, so the date 08AUG1985, must refer to the date the P2 reg was cancelled, is that date in your log?

May be wrong but I don't recall Panga operating SE aircraft? And why would Panga be at Omkalai? More likely TAL/Talair?

TAA Cessna,s in NG

Hi, I am 18-Wheelers old man. I can add a little bit more info that may help.
In 1958 I arrived in PNG, Goroka with TAL. Had been an Instructor with RAC NSW at Bankstown. Buchcanan gave me GKA the oldest 170 possible. Round tail etc, he then started getting 180's second-hand from US. GKB a good one, silver with green stripe, then GKC which was a ex float plane, all over red with black stripe .... so so. The payload on the 170 was with 2 hours fuel was 600 lb, the 180 was 800 and the 185 was 1200. Mid 1960 TAA arrived and I got a seat, was told I would be on the SE Otter.
I got an endorsement on VH SBP, a 182 that TAA had acquired new. Ivan Neale gave me the endorsement on 14th of September 1961 at Lae.
Then got an endorsement on VH SBU, a 185, on 4th of Dec 1962, both these aircraft were new. I flew the Otter every week into Southern and Western Highlands, but occasionally did charters in the two Cessna's out of Lae.
Went pinis mid 1963, so cannot offer anything after this date. I did a longer story when asked and it was put into one of the Three Balus books.

"Butch" was killed in the Montfort C206 further downriver.Wreckage and a memorial still at Bosset some 7 yrs ago. Was your 180 the one restored by Jim Casson Xwind?

P2-MFW and MFE at Horn Isl

This 1972 photo is when MFW was being ferried to PNG after its Australian CofA at Ballarat. It suffered a HF failure and met up with MFE at Horn Isl so as to gain entry to Port Moresby FIR, where it was repaired. MFW was flown by Roger Young and Ted Crawford in MFE, both MAF pilot's. Wonder where these 2 aircraft are now ?

Roger was involved in building the prototype Bennett Airtruck in NZ, which later became the Transavia PL-12 Airtruk (and, before you pick on my spelling, the "c" is missing because Bennett's owned the name Airtruck).

At least 120 had been built by 1988. The PL-12 featured in the 1985 movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

P2-AWM returned to the PNG register after its period in Oz as P2-AWM until it was written off in 1992.

P2-BAF changed to P2-ROW around 1989 until it too was written off in 1992 - may have been early 1993.
