VFR trip YMMB to YBMC, tips+info?
G'day all, in an effort to knock over my last command hours toward CPL I am planning a VFR flight from YMMB to YBMC and return a few days later. I am planning on doing the trip up over 2 days. Just wanting to know if any of you can recommend a good half way stop-over point and any other tips for the trip? Aircraft will be a TB200 Tobago. Cheers.

My tip avoid TIGER COUNTRY.........In a filthy Tobago with a 4:1 glide ratio and 83 knts from memory you don’t have much time or many options. But if you have plenty of time on type it is just another day in the office
Enjoy the trip
Enjoy the trip
I just did it BMC to MMB and stopped at Dubbo for fuel. If you go for the shortest distance Dubbo is a good stop, but its not that interesting the ocasional set of hills... The coast is more exciting but more like a 3 day trip and lots of $$$
Tip # 1 ... lose the tobago! (ok, maybe thats just opinion, but every aircraft I've ever flown, twins included, all glide better than a toboggan)
#2 ... Going throuhg sydney, go via wollongong, then up Victor 1, then also get a clearance to go through Willy coastal past newcastle. Try and get coastal through YBCG as well. (In case you haven't noticed, I'm a huge fan of coastal routes!)
#3... Definitely get airborne early, you dont want to be in a rush! Stops, well probably wollongong, cessnock, maitland (NSW) and port macquarie are all good ones.
Thats all I've got.
Oh, #4... Enjoy it!!!!!!

Go Coastal as suggested either up or back, and do that with the bestter days you can find in your time slot, and do the Narromine stop over on the way back....Wright Flyer replica and other stuff to see. Good Chinese at the Golf club in walking distance to the airfield.
YBMC-YMOR-YNRM, then from there.....well up to you maybe back via Temora?

bigglesx,
sounds like it will be a great trip for you, my advice is what ever the route you choose have a really, really good look at the airspace you will encounter along the way, (i.e. don't enter controlled airspave without a clearance) and always have an out. That is if your plan is to stop at Dubbo and the weathers is crap when you get there, getting dark or the like. Have a couple of plan B's thought out. Know what aerodromes/ options you have around you before you go. Get the taf and notams for them also not just your planned destination. Most of all have fun, and if you not sure ask!

In my opinion, don't go coastal, or at least not too much. When you come to your CPL test, you're not going to be tested on flying coastal. Get together some WACs, and choose some fairly difficult places to find (homesteads etc). Set yourself a challenge. You will want to see the coast in some places, mainly so that you can go through the controlled airspace there and get well comfortable with the procedures. But other than that, try to make it a little bit challenging by keeping away from the coast line.
Not certain how well it works for you in terms of position along the route (it would be about two thirds of the way), but Longreach is worth a stop to see the museum.
You may also want to do a little research into places that are employing fresh CPL holders along the way, so that you can drop in and introduce yourself.
As Bangbus said, make sure you plan thoroughly, and read the ERSA about the places you are going so you know what to expect when you turn up. Another tip - if you are relying on refuelling somewhere, call and check with the operator that the equipment is serviceable - last thing you want is to be stranded!

Couple of points
The direct route takes you over the Pilaga forest for some distance, a diversion a bit to the west and between the E and W Pilaga adds a couple of miles on the NRM TWB leg and avoids ~30 mile of Tiger country. WAC doesn't show the forest but Google Earth/Maps is your friend.
CDR is close to BMC but no fees

Longreach is nowhere near the Moorabbin-Maroochydore route. It will take about the same amount of time from Moorabbin to Longreach as it would from Moorabbin to Maroochydore, and then you've got another five or six hundred miles from Longreach back to Maroochy.
But its a GREAT museum!

The Qantas Museum is crap - IMHO!

Which ever way you decide to go 'Bigglesx' just plan thoroughly. Good point with ref staying away from the coast for most of the trip, unless you plan to start from a coastal airport for yr rating then most ATO's would take you inland to where it's difficult to find an off the beaten goat track as a diversion!
I got exactly that many moons ago in central NSW, once I found the homestead the examiner said are you sure??? he said it a few times whilst I orbited overhead, I said yep that's it, he said yr correct now lets head home ! Latter he wanted me to know that in the real world of charter the client might not even know himself!
good luck enjoy the view.
oh BTW some great advice by one of my very early instructors. Whilst flying & during yr check/test flight never sit there looking as if you have it all nailed, always look busy & the examiner will feel sorry for you & not bother you too much, I'm still looking busy even now just in case someone asks a curly Q like.............where are we now !!!, it worked for me !

Sometimes I use the great circle mapper to get a rough idea of the times and distances in early planning stages. Makes rough and ready estimates pretty quickly. Be sure to make proper plans prior to departure tho-
