What would get you home?

The crisis that many airlines in Oz are facing with crewing could be sorted in a flash if they offered a descent salary. So what's it gonna take. So many of us are working OS and although I can only speak for myself I'd dearly love to return home. I'm currently pulling over $150G's oz as an effo on a tidy little burner. I'd come home for a little less...but not much less. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Anyone else care to share their price? If nothing else it'll give the management guys that troll this site a clue to what we reckon is a fair days pay. Over to you....

No idea what your flying or where your flying it, but, the money your making, is the same as a LCC Captain in Aus!!!

Except we're junior FOs Aussie so lets say a $50K paycut is considerable, probably more if you lose certain tax benefits.

and all those 'Little" things should be thrown into the equation too. But thats obvious..............I sincerely hope!!!!!!!!

Nice ideal, but this entire country has geared up for the quick buck. Heck, in Sydney it costs me 20 bucks just to get out of the house and pick up the mail from my letterbox, figuratively speaking. Can you afford to live on 50-80k a year, pay a mortgage, pay for your own endos, pay for your kids food, clothing, schooling, plus all the sundries and services like telephones, internet, fuel, rego, insurance, CASA fees, medicals, annuals and currency requirements, docs, etc, etc.

Get real.

Def:

If you like the life you get for your 150k, stay away. If you are ready for a semi-retirement happy-go-lucky with a bit of pocket money on the side flying some 25+yo tin bucket, I've been told Australia is the place for you.

After having many discussions with people that I know back in Oz, the standard of intake pilots has been slipping for years and that there are many FOs who think that they deserve a command after 18months-2 years on the job. Few of these FOs are up to the task.

Australian aviation is becoming an international joke as the training systems are simply not geared up to take a 1500hr GA pilot with some ME/MC time and turn them into an effective, competant Captain within this time frame. What is needed is an integrated training program that covers an appropriate and comprehensive sylbus of requisite knowledge, as occurs in the rest of the world. Why else can the airlines of Asia and Europe take 250 hr cadets and groom them to become effective captains within 4-5 years? I'm not sorry to tell some of you young blokes, but that is the sort of time frame that is required to develop the neccessary skill set for command.

To intice me back to Oz to participate in the current circus, otherwise known as "The Australian Airline Industry" will require the following:

1) Company can pay for and arrange my tranport and accomodation to and from the interview.

2) Cover the cost of my type rating, for which it is reasonable for me to enter into a training bond.

3) 80% of final salary until CTL.

4) Base salary of of $180 K (narrow body), $240K (widebody) for a 70hr roster and then $500 p.h. overtime. Minimum.(Plus Super, LOL etc..)

5) S.E.S level allowances.

6) 6 weeks annual leave.

7) D.E.C. on my current type or accelerated promotion if empolyed on a new type. The company can expect reasonable performance markers to met prior to my promotion to Captain on a new type.

I have already told those at J* that 1) & 2) are preconditions of my attendance at interview. They did not accept this and that is their right. As is mine to stay right where I am, very happy, thanks very much.

1. Base in a liveable city, Perth or Brisbane. Possibly Adelaide, Sydney only if the dollars were enough to cover the increased costs of living there.

2. Package that after tax gives me a comfortable standard of living and reasonable saving ability.

3. Good work pattern, 60 -70 hours a month with time off at home.

4. Staff travel, domestic and overseas.

5. Company treats its pilots well, good working atmosphere.

6. Good equipment, New Generation jets.

7. Quick progression if I join as a f/o.

8. Job security, stable company.

If all this was on the table returning would be very tempting, but I'm not holding my breath.

What countries do you all fly in? I'm just getting in to the industry and I'm willing to move anywhere to get a job and to get hours. Reading through all this feedback it doesn't sound like Australia is the best place to be. US is hard to get in to given the Green Card rules etc, where else do you go?!

It sounds like such an exciting time in the industry, there seems to be so much change and movement going on!

I think you need to reassess your definition of a liveable city. Perth is great, however the costs are skyrocketing. Perth was only pipped by Sydney in house costs a few months ago by around $20-30,000.

Is there anywhere in Australia that is cheap to live nowadays?

Nope.

Even dear old Albury was hit hard by the recent housing price boom. You can now expect to pay Melbourne prices for homes here.

Friend just built a 3 bedroom/study/toilet/ebnsuit here at cost of $400K, another mate sold a 35 year old unit before the boom for $42K, same unit sold 18 months later for $110K, it is just down the road from my old place, I had a look during the open day and the new owner had not spent a cent!

I own property I bought before the boom and therefore have made a 'paper profit' however I think booms such as the one we experienced are a friggin pain in the neck.

Although prices in Adelaide have also skyrocketed, its still reasonable when comparing to the other cities in Aus....

I agree with you ralph the bong.

I also would love to come back home but when conditions and salary are the way they are, then forget it!

The airlines still need to wake up in Aus!

Don't know.... many of the current offerings for GA bugsmashers are tempting enough for me.

80-90k for a E120 or metro job. I could live on that and still be able to afford a 6 pack every now and then.

Pilot Shortage??

Team America,

You're right on the money!

When you see the good quality experienced pilots (yes, they have solid Metro, King Air incl RFDS, even B737 F/O time)

being knocked back by the airlines, you slowly realise that there isn't a shortage of pilots,

instead, maybe just a shortage of pilots willing to pay for interviews, pay for endorsements etc so that they get to eventually work for peanuts.


There are plenty of good pilots out there, but some airlines are prepared to pay their clerical staff more than their pilots.

I think its time for the myth busters to step in before section 457 visa holders allow the pay and conditions to remain as they are.
